Dear Kiwanians:
Happy 100th Anniversary. As Kiwanis International president, I feel privileged to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Kiwanis with you. The club that started its service in Detroit, Michigan, USA, a century ago created an international movement that continues to improve lives and communities each day. I hope you are as honoured as I am to continue that legacy.
Along with the incredible difference you are making in your ommunity, we can be proud that millions of children have grown up free of preventable mental disabilities because of iodine added to their salt through Kiwanis' promise to reduce Iodine Deficiency Disorders. And now, millions of women and their future children have been protected from maternal and neonatal tetanus because of The eliminate Project. However, 134 newborns still die every day from this painful and heart-wrenching disease.
It is easy to make a difference every single day through The eliminate Project. Just US$1.80 saves lives. I'd like to ask you to join me in committing to save a baby a day for one or two years. Every day for that period of time, no matter what is happening in your life, you will be able to look in the mirror and know that you saved the life of a woman and her futusre babies. Ridding the planet of this disease is our gift to the world.
I hope to see you at the celebration we are planning for the Kiwanis International Convention this June in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. If ever there was a Kiwanis convention not to miss, this is it! Well the first of 100th Anniversary celebrations was started in our Division over at Luling last Wednesday. There were about 0 in attendance, members from other clubs, and we had 7 from our club; Randy Cook, John Polk, Rob Martin, Lon Shell, Del Brown, Tracy Herman and Glen Rydl. It was a fine meal of grilled chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and salad. Of course, the dessert was the special Kiwanis 100th Anniversary cake. There will be other celebrations throughout the month and probably into next month leading up to the International Convention in Indianapolis, Indiana in June of this year.

DelBrown offered to do it, but David had already grabbed the ball...Yea! David.

Our Club, last Thursday, voted to strive to be a Model Club for the next five years. As you probably already know, we are in a desperate battle to eliminate Maternal Neonatal Tetanus from around the world. It is a terrible disease, killing a child about every 11 minutes in many 3d World countries. What we voted on last Thursday was to pick up the challenge which Kiwanis Internatio
nal has laid upon us to eliminate MNT over the next 5 years. This does not mean that every individuial needs to donate so much for the next five years, although you may want to do that, but it means that through individuals,fundraising, we shall achieve the goal that Kiwanis International has set upon our club. Several individuals have personally donated from our club through the Zeller award. Let me run some figures by you which International has figured for our club based on 29 members.
We now have 31 members. We were asked to help raise $21,550 based on 29 members, that comes to $750 per person X 29. Our most recent amount that we have already donated is10,889.84. That leaves $10,860.16 remaining to be paid over five years. T
here are matching funds available in TX/OK District to match 20% of the remaining balance over 5 years. That would leave $8,688.13, which comes to about $299.59 per person over five years or $24.97 per member per year.

 This coming Thursday's program will be brought by David Chandler. Our speaker will be Anthony Cedrone, M.D. Dr. Cedrone received his medical degree from the State university of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY. He served his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University hospital, and was active on the Resident Research Committee, Faculty Advisory Committee and Medicine Continuity Clinic Committee. Dr. Cedrone completed his fellowship in Interventional Cardiology from North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, NY. His areas of special interest include peripheral arterial disease and structural heart disease. He is Board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology and Internal Medicine. Dr. Cedrone enjoys spending time with his family and playing golf.
