LET'S FACE IT - ENGLISH IS A CRAZY LANGUAGE. WHAT DO I MEAN?
1. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple or pine in pineapple.
English muffins were'nt invented in England or French fries in France,
Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which are's sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that....quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.
If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats i what does a humantarian eat?
Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane.
In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that tun and feet that smell?

YOU KNOW WE OF THE OLDER CLASS OF PEOPLE REALLY FELT LIKE GETTING OLD ISN'T SO BAD AFTER ALL.
After listening to Nick Reali last Thursday, tell us about all of the programs that Parks and Recreation has planned for Active Senior Adults, one who is already there needn't feel like no one cares about you. Nick explained the multitude of activities that he is personally responsible for in planning programs to keep active senior adults feel needed and important. We all are going to get old, and it doesn't need to be a "bummer" to get old, as long as we take advantage of some of the wonderful activities that Nick has planned, from games, to trail walks, to movies to wonderful tours to 'pickleball', to swimming, to exercise to walking, to running, (slowly) to social events, like dancing, to movies in the park to.....well you name it, and Nick would be willing to explore the possibilities and probably will have it set up in nothing flat. Thank you Nick for bringing what a wonderful, far reaching program

OUR UPCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, JULY 30, 2015
 John Polk will be bringing Cpl Laray Taylor and Cpl Scott Johnson to our club meeting this coming Thursday. Both of these police officers are part of the Community Services Division of the San Marcos Police Department. The San Marcos Police Department sponsors a Citizen's Police Academy; a unique learning experience conducted by the Police Department and designed to give citizens a better understanding of the mission and operations of the department. The 13 week course consists of one three hour session per week. Participants will be be introduced to the basic information that all police officers must know to perform their duty, including such topics as patrol tactics, criminal and narcotics investigations, use of force, communications, officer training, DWI procedures, family violence and juvenile law.
Once a citizen has graduated from the CPA he/she is invited to continue their relationship with the San Marcos Police Department by joining the San Marcos Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association (SMCPAAA).
The SMCPAAA offers activities that assist the police department, obtaining special equipment, assisting in the protection of property while residents are away on holidays and providing meals for officers, communications operators, fire fighters, and EMS personnel who must work Christmas Day.

 A great big 'Thank you' goes out to Randy Cook and Glen Rydl. Randy is our club treasurer and keeps excellent financial records, and Glen Rydl who was asked to do an audit review of our financial records to send on up to Tx/OK District. When the records are in good shape as ours are, then it is not a big job. These two individuals are to be commended. Randy will continue on as Treasurer for the coming year, and Glen will assume the office of Secretary for the coming year, replacing John Polk who has been our secretary for several years. John will be our newly elected Lt. Governor for the coming year. |

  DON'T FORGET, 'OCTOBER DASH 2015 WILL BE ON US BEFORE WE KNOW IT.
Thanks to Kelly who has sent out a list, to selected individuals, of sponsors from last year's race. Those of you who have received that list are reminded to comply with the 'cautions' which Kelly set forth in her e-mail. That is privileged information and should only be referred to by the one responsible for getting the sponsorship. Kelly has done a magnificent job as she did last year with her committee, and the successs of last year's race indicated her hard work. Let's do our part and seek to get sponsors for this year's race....remember the date....October 24 (Saturday) 2015. Place: the back lot of San Marcos Toyota on IH-35. The route will probably be pretty much the same as it was last year, but watch for further developments.

  "PARTY IN THE PINEY WOODS"
"Party in the Piney Woods" is the theme for this year's TX/OK District District Convention. It will be held on August 6 - 8, 2015. It will be held in Texarkana, TX. I believe we will be having at least three, maybe four attending from our club. President Del cannot attend because of another commitment, but our President Elect, Moe Johnson will be going, as well as John Polk, our future Lt. Governor and Rob Martin, our current Lt. Governor will be going. Frederick Case will also be going. Let's wish them all well. Our club program on August 13 will be to hear reports from those who attended.

I know we are early on this but we want to get it on your calendar, The date is September 17, 2015. The event is 'Installation Banquet'. The place is 'The Price Center' on San Antonio Street, Let's try and have a full house there. We don't have any particulars yet, but will in plenty of time for you to make plans to attend, you and your significant other. More later!

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE WEEK OF 24 July TO JULY 30
(My apology for giving you the wrong dates for when Disneyland opened in Anaheim, California. It was not July 17, 1821, it was July 17, 1955. Sorry!)
July 24, 1945.......At the conclusion of the Potsdam Conference in Germany, Winston Churchill, Harry Truman and China's representatives issued a demand for unconditional Japanese surrender. The Japanese, unaware the demand was backed up by an Atomic bomb, rejected the Potsdam Declaration on July 26.
July 25, 1898........During the Spanish-American War, the US invaded Puerto Rico, which was then a Spanish colony. In 1917, Puerto Ricans became American citizens and Puerto Rico became an unincorporated territory of the US. Partial self-government was granted in 1947 allowing citizens to elect their own governor. In 1951, Puerto Ricans wrote their own constitution and elected a non-voting commissioner to represent them in Washington.
July 26, 1945..........The U.S. Cruiser Indianapolis arrived at Tinian Island in the Marianas with an unassembled Atomic Bomb, met by scientists ready to complete the assembly.
July 27,1953 ...........The Korean War ended with the signing of an armistice by U.S. and North Korean delegates at Panmunjom, Korea. The war had lasted just over three years.
July 28, 1932...........The Bonus March eviction in Washington, D.C., occurred as U.S. Army troops under the command of General Douglas McArthur, Major Dwight D. Eisenhower and Major George S. Patton, and and burned the encampments of unemployed World War I veterans. About 15,000 veterans had marched on Washington demanding payment of a war bonus they had been promised. After two months encampment in Washington's Anacostin Flats, forced eviction of the bonus marchers by the U.S. Army was ordered by President Herbert Hoover.
July 29, 1883...........Benito Mussolini was born in Dovia, Italy. He ruled Italy from 1922 - 1943, first as prime minister and then as "Ill Duce", the absolute dictator.
July 30, 1975..........Former Teamster's Union leader James Hoffa was last seen outside a restaurant near Detroit, Michigan. His 13 year federal prison sentence had been commuted by President Richard M. Nixon in 1971. On December 8, 1982, seven years after his disappearance, an Oakland County judge declared Hoffa officially dead.
