Another Ramp Was Built
This ramp was built for Mary Limon, at 206 Comacho St, San Marcos. It was a 34 foot ramp and was built on October 9th, 2017. It was made by the Warehouse Ramp Team, plus Kiwanis members. It took approximately 3 hours to build this ramp. Mary Limon was able to use her ramp when she returned from 6 hours in dialysis. She was assisted by her daughter and grand son. She had just come home last week from rehab after a leg amputation.
The ramp team got this organized and built in 4 days after she came home. Gary Nelson, Ramp team leader wants to thank Bill Stich, Gary Strunk and Doug Balkman for getting this ramp built.
Our Program From Last Thursday,
Thanks to our wonderful speaker last Thursday, Lt Col Henry Gonzalez, area Salvation Army Commander for the Austin area states.
According to Lt Col Gonzalez, Salvation Army is 152 years old having started in 1865 by William Booth, is available in 172 languages and is found in 122 countries. Their primary function is to do the Lord's work by preaching the Gospel and helping people who are in need. It5 is a social ministry which involves an array of personal needs both individuals as well as families and circumstances. Some of the areas he spoke about had to do with veteran's affairs, elderly services, housing, problems related to human trafficking, missing persons, prison ministries, hunger relief, homeless members, disaster services and just about any human need that can be helped with.
For almost as long as The Salvation Army has existed, it has operated hospitals and clinics in some of the most needy areas of the world, and that remains true today.
From sites of natural and man-made disasters to places of human conflict, the Salvation Army is there to provide compassion and practical support to those in real and sudden need. And I like this fact that even though the Army strives to provide first for the immediate physical needs but beyond that, they give ministry for the aching heart and the weary soul.
Thanks to Lt Col Gonzalez for sharing an in depth message of what the Salvation Army has been doing throughout its history, but also always standing ready to continue this God-given service to the needy. Thanks to Gary Strunk for bringing this wonderful presentation. It was wonderful!
Our Program for this coming Thursday, October 19, 2017
Tracy Herman will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday. Her speaker will be Alisha Roberts. Alisha is an experienced Project Development Manager with a demonstrated history of working in the non-profit organization management industry
She oversees the pre-construction and construction phases of a capital campaign to co-locate (4) anchor organizations providing complimentary programs and services to residents in Hays County and the City of San Marcos. Family Justice Center has a specific focus to serve the victims of domestic and violent crimes to createa "one stop" service center while working collectively with other nonprofit and government agencies. The new facility will be named "Village Main" and will house Family Justice Center of Hays County, Community Action, ECI - Homespun/Early Childhood Intervention and W.I.C. - Women, Infants and Children.
The The 22,000 square foot Village Main building will be built at 215 Reimer Avenue off Hunter Road and future home to Community Action Inc. of Central Texas.
Notice: Put this on your calendar as a reminder for the K-Kids Induction Ceremony. It is Friday, October 20th, at 2:00pm in the Lorenzo DeZavala Cafeteria. That is next Friday! We need a good turnout of members. Please check in at the office by 1:45pm. Remember that this is a big 'deal' to these kids. Let's be there to cheer them on!

Here's a shot from last year's Dash....they are getting ready....Are we ready? Do we have a good bunch of runners, still need little 'somethings' to put in the bags. It will be fun, it's a lot of work, and we want to thank all of the members of the Dash Committee that has worked long and hard to pull this run off. Remember, this is a event that should include our whole club, so be at Toyota back lot at 6:30am ready to help set up, and get ready. Remember, once the race starts, it's too late to get ready. 9:00am is the kick-off or 'push-off' whatever. Costumes if you want to, it is close to Halloween, you know. OK! See you there! Tell your friends who run, it's not too late for that! Remember the date: OCTOBER 21, 2017. Let's have a ball! See you there!

October 19, 1781 - - As their band played "The World Upside Down" the British Army marched out in formation and surrendered to the Americans at Yorktown. More than 7,000 British and Hessian troops, led by British General Lord Cornwallis surrendered to General Geogre Washington. The war between Britain and its American colonies was effectively ended. The final peace treaty was signed in Paris on September 3, 1783.
Facts About The Planet Pluto
1............In the first place, Pluto is a dwarf planet. It travels around, or orbits, the sun just like other planets. But it is much smaller.
2............Pluto is not very big. It is only half as wide as the United States. Pluto is smaller than Earth's moon. This dwarf planet takes 248 Earth years to go around the sun. If you lived on Pluto, you would have to wait 248 Earth years to celebrate your first birthday. One day on Pluto is about 6 1/2 days on Earth.
3.............Pluto is about 40 times farther from the sun than Earth is Pluto is in an area of space called the Kuiper (KY-per) Belt. Thousands of small icy objects, like Pluto but smaller are in the Kuiper Belt.
4..............This dwarf planet has five moons. Its largest moon is named Charon. Charon is about half the size of Pluto. Pluto's four other moons are named Kerberos, Styx, Nix and Hydra.
5...............Pluto has less gravity than Earth. This means a person would weigh much less on Pluto than on Earth.
6...............NASA learns about Pluto from pictures taken with telescopes. Pictures from the Hubble Space Telescope helped scientists find the four smaller moons.
7...............NASA decided to send a spacecraft to fly close to Pluto. The spacecraft's name is New Horizons. It is only about the size of a piano. New Horizon launched in January 2006. In the summer of 2015, New Horizons flew by Pluto and its moons. It took almost 10 years to travel that far from Earth.
8...............Scientists found out more about Pluto's smaller moons too. They learned that Pluto's moons spin faster than other moons. The moon Hydra spins 89 times for each time it orbits Pluto! And the moons wobble like spinning tops.
9................Pluto is more than 3.7 billion miles from the sun. Most planets orbit the sun in a near-circle. The sun is in the center of the circle. But Pluto does not orbit in a circle. The orbit of Pluto is shaped like an oval. And the sun is not in the center. Pluto's orbit is also tilted.
10...............Pluto is 1,400 miles wide. Pluto is about 230 degrees below zero.

6..........Babe Ruth, the Sultan of Swat, was born in Baltimore and attended Saint Mary's Industrial School!

8..........America's national anthem was written by Francis Scott Key, a Maryland lawyer. It is believed Key wrote the anthem on September 14, 1814 while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor.
9..........Since May 30th, 1949 the United States flag has flown continuously over the monument marking the site of Francis Scott Key's birthplace. The flag flies at Terra Rubra Farm, Carroll County, Keymar, Maryland as mandated by a Joint Resolution of Congress!

The Francis Scott Key Bridge, also known as the Outer Harbor Bridge or simply the Key Bridge, is a steel Arch-shaped Continuous Through Truss Bridge spanning the Patapsco River in Baltimore, Maryland. The main span of 1200 is the third longest span of any continuous truss in the world. It is also the longest bridge in the Baltimore area.
The bridge was opened in March 1977 and is named for the author of the Star Spangled Banner, Francis Scott Key. The bridge is the outermost of three toll crossings of Baltimore's Harbor. Upon completion, the bridge structure and its approaches became the final link in Interstate 695.
Construction began in 1972, and the bridge opened to traffic on March 23, 1977. Including its connecting approaches, the bridge project is 10.9 miles in length.
Located in an area rich with American history, scholars believe the span crosses within 100 yards of the site, marked in the water off the bridge by a stars and striped painted buoy, where Francis Scott Key witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry on the evening of September 12, 1814. That battle inspired Key to write the words of the Star Spangled Banner. Located just southeast of the bridge are the ruins of Fort Carroll.
