Our Program from last Week, April 27, 2017
Pam Cook brought a wonderful speaker to our club last week. She was Nancy Nusbaum, who is the Associate Vice President for Finance and Support Service. Beside that gigantic task, she brought a slide presentation on what the campus of Texas State University will look like over the next ten years. She spelled out pretty much in detail what additions, deletions, changes, and modifications will be either added to or changed in minor as well as major changes. She presented the Campus Master Plan, dealing with new buildings, new parking arrangements, new roadways, new walkways. She expects over the next ten years, that the population will increase about 3%, with a great number of students who are freshmen. The transportation issue is a bit of problem, especially with those with vehicles, or motorcycles, or bicycles. Nancy encouraged many questions and she did a fantastic job of answering them. She brought with her to the meeting a guest, Chris Reynolds who ran the slide presentation. Thank you Pam for bringing Nancy, and thank you Nancy for presenting a wonderful and informative program with regards to the future of our University.
Our Program for this coming Thursday, May 4, 2017
Del Brown will be bringing the program this coming Thursday and No, we are not having all of these folks present for our program. Only Lt. Jeri Skrocki (6th person from the far left of the photo. She will be accompanied by Deputy Sheriff Steve Traeger. They, along with others have been involved in the Hays County Standard Response Protocol Task Force within our San Marcos School System.
Back in September of last year , the Hays County Commissioners Court recognized the SRPTF for receiving the State's J.C. Montgomery Child Safety Award in August for its development of standard response protocols and emergency training for all schools in Hays County. Lt. Jeri Skrocki, our speaker was a very vital part of that Task Force.
The Hays County Office of Emergency Management Standard Response Protocol Task Force has been recognized for it's leadership in child safety by the Texas Office for the Prevention of Developmental Disabilities (TOPDD) with this special award.
The Hays County OEM Standard Response Protocol Task Force created plans for responding to school emergencies, weather disasters and all other contingencies and have trained more than 64,000 students, teachers and others.
Board of Directors Meeting
The Kiwanis Board of Directors met last Thursday, April 27th at 5:30pm at Brookdale San Marcos North, with President Tracy Herman presiding. Those present were Kelli Whigham, Del Brown, Francis Mendez, Gary Nelson Gary Strunk, Tracy Herman and Doug Balkman.
The Secretary, Glen Rydl was not present because of a knee injury so there was no Secretary Minutes from last month. The Treasurer Charles Johnson was not present, so there was no financial report.
We had some guests from Circle K clubs at University of Texas and Texas State University. Those guests Hannah Varghexse, , who is Lt. Governor from Hill Country District; Pablo Ortiz, from UT Circle K Club, and Erick Garza who is contemplating going to Texas State. The reason for their visit was to see what kind of interest our club had in starting a Circle K club at TSU. All of the preliminary work has been done, there is definitely an interest among the students at TSU. All they need is for a Club member to act as sponsor. There was a lot of discussion and our board came away feeling very positive about starting a Circle K. Nothing definite was decided. I am sure there will be much discussion on this in the weeks to come.
Also there was discussion regarding our club sponsoring a meal at the Cottage Kitchen on May 19th. The meal will be from 11:00am to 1:00pm. Pres. Tracy is working out the details and the menu.. The Board members are asked to be at the cottage this coming Monday, May 1, at 5pm for a group picture to be put in the Daily Record
New Key Club T-Shirts!
At the last Board of Directors meeting, Gary Strunk came in to show the board what the new San Marcos High School Key Club T-Shirts are going to look like. They had just come in last Thursday. The kids are ecstatic about them, and will wear them proudly. Pres. Tracy is showing off the T-Shirt to the rest of the Board.
Flag Coordinator Needed.
Our first flag day is on May 29 - Memorial Day, and we need to get our flag customers renewal letters first thing. Randy Cook is no longer going to be Flag Coordinator, but he is going to write up the letters for those of us who have routes to contact our customers and get their renewal OK, as well as their renewal amount. We definitely need someone in the club to step forward and take over the job that Randy has been doing over the past several years. Our first flag day will be on us before we know it. We are to meet at Ted's place by 7am ion Memorial Day and those who pick up flags pick up between 4:30 & 5:00pm.

August 28, 1789: On board the British ship Bounty, Fletcher Christian led a mutiny against Captain William Bligh, setting him and 19 loyal crew members adrift in a 23 foot open boat. Bryce Canyon, Utah
By 1919, tourists from Salt Lake City were visiting Bryce Canyon. Gilbert Stanley Underwood was hired by the Union Pacific to design a lodge near Sunset Point. The original main building was finished by May 1925.
President Warren G. Harding proclaimed Bryce Canyon a national monument on June 8, 1923. On June 7, 1924, Congress passed a bill to establish Utah National Park when all land within the national monument would become the property of the United States. The land was acquired and the name was restored to Bryce Canyon. On February 25, 1928, Bryce Canyon officially became a national park.
In 1930, the Zion-Mt Carmel tunnel was completed. This effectively tied Bryce, Zion, Cedar Breaks and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon together.
The size of the park was increased to the current 35, 835 acres in 1931. In 1931, the park workforce completed a total of 4.5 miles of foot and horse trails. This included Sunset Point to Bryce Point to Peek-a-boo Canyon and Sunrise to Campbell Canyon. The road to Rainbow Point was completed by private construction companies by late 1934.
