Butter Braid Pastries Fundraiser
Several members of our club took Order Blanks for our current fundraiser from Butter Braid Pastries. Last Week's Program
John Roppolo was our program last week, and he filled us in with so much information with regards to Special Olympics. As a parent of an autistic child, John got himself totally involved in this important part of special need children. He explained just how important these Special Olympics are, not only to the children and youth, but also to the parents. Here, John is showing off one of the Special Olympics Volley Ball T-Shirts.
To the left, is an enlarged medal that his son won. Thanks John for sharing your great love for this important aspect of your son's life and that of your family.
Well, Well, Well! Chester Banks is one lucky person. His name was drawn again for Big Bucks, but this time, he kept it! What's your secret Chester?

JoAnna Gilland is providing the program for this coming Thursday, and she will be bringing Matt Patterson from Matt Patterson Insurance. Matt has quite a background in matters other than insurance. So as not to leave anything out, you are going to have to come to the noon meeting this week to find out all of the interesting stories that Matt has to tell us. See you then!

August 3, 1492 - - Christopher Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, with three ships, Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. Seeking a westerly route to the Far East, he instead landed on October 12th in the Bahamas, thinking it was an outlying Japanese island.
August 4, 1964 - - Three young civil rights workers, James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner, were found murdered and buried in an earthen dam outside Philadelphia, Mississippi. They had disappeared on June 21 after being detained by Neshoba County police on charges of speeding. They were participating in the Mississippi Summer project organized by the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) to increase black voter registration. When their car was found burned on June 23, President Lyndon Johnson ordered the FBI to search for the men.
August 5, 1583 - - The first British colony in North America was founded by Sir Humphrey Gilbert, a British navigator and explorer. He sighted the Newfoundland coast and took possession of the area around St. John's harbor in the name of the Queen. He was later lost at sea in a storm off the Azores on his return trip to England.
August 6, 1962 - - Jamaica achieved independence after centuries of British and Spanish rule. During 150 years of Spanish rule, African slaves were first brought to the island. The British invaded in 1655 and the slave trade greatly expanded during the 1700's. Following the abolition of slavery in the 1830s, Jamaica remained a British colony.
August 7, 1964 - - Following an attack on two U.S. destroyers in the Gulf of Tonkin off North Vietnam, the U.S. Congress approved the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, granting President Lyndon Johnson authority "to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression.
August 8, 1945 - - Soviet Russia declared war on Japan and sent troops into Japanese-held Manchuria.
August 9, 1974 - - Effective at noon, Richard M. Nixon resigned the presidency as a result of the Watergate scandal. Nixon had appeared on TV the night before and announced his decision to the American people. Facing possible impeachment by Congress, he became the only U.S. President ever to resign.

"Before the days of the electric or mechanical doorbells, anyone coming to your house just had to pound a metal knocker that was nailed to the front door. Sometimes it took a lot of heavy smacks to get attention. This meant that the nails holding this metal plate on the door got a lot of wear, eventually having the life pounded out of it and it fell out. Today anything that is totally withered or a failed project or situation that is hopeless is considered to be as dead as a doornail.
Alternate origin "Nails were in short supply and high demand in colonial times. People would go out in the night and steal the nails from their neighbors doors. To prevent this from happening. the ends of the nails inside, were bent and hammered down to prevent them from being pulled out, from the outside. The nail was said to be dead and the act was deadening the nail. It could not be removed and all other uses were of that nail were eliminated.....i.e. the nail was dead!
