 Our Fellow Kiwanian, Frederick Case informed his club last Thursday that Kiwanis International has appointed him to be the District Chairman for the FORMULA project for the Texas/Oklahoma District.   OUR PROGRAM FROM LAST THURSDAY
Thanks to Chester Banks for bringing Laura Torres, Volunteer Coordinator for CASA, (Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA is a national volunteer movement that began more than 30 years ago, when Judge David Soukup in Seattle decided he needed to know more about the children whose lives were in his hands. He asked community volunteers to act as a "voice in court" for abused and neglected children. CASA volunteers provided him with the detailed information he needed to protect the children's best interest and ensure that they were placed in safe, permanent homes as quickly as possible.
In Texas, 89 local CASA programs with more than 7,000 volunteers are serving over 22,000 abused and neglected children in foster care.

 OUR CLUB IS OFFICIALLY A 'MODEL' CLUB
Even though the picture to the left reads 2012, our 'Model Club patch' reads 2015. All of our club members
need to congratulate yourself for engaging in the Eliminate Project. We are only one club in many in Kiwanis International, but we have done over and above oui fair share of eliminating Maternal Neonatal Tetanus. The patch was sewn on our banner by Marie Brown, and it looks great. If you haven't received your lapel pin, Del Brown has them, and will give
to those who have not received them, on Thursday.

OUR PROGRAM FOR THIS COMING THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4,
Randy Cook will be bringing the program for this week's club meeting. He is bringing, Mr, Maresch, principal at DeZavala Elementary School, where we have both a Terrific Kids and a K-Kids program. Also Kayla Shook,, the 4th Grade teacher at DeZavala School,and also the school's leader in their K-Kids program. They will also be bringing a couple of K-kids with them. The picture to the left is a picture of the K-Kids taken last year, attended by Chester Banks, Randy, and Del Brown.
At this week's meeting, we will also be presenting a check written to the K-Kids, from a passing of the hat donation last Thursday. That money will help the K-Kids in their fundraiser, "Pennies for Patients", to help in treatment of Leukemia and Lymphoma Cancer......"Since 1994, millions of dollars have been raised in pennies and other small change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students throughout the country." Let's have a great turnout this Thursday.

"Paula, mother was anxiously awaiting her daughter, Janet's plane to land. Janet had just come back from abroad, trying to find adventure during her gap year. As Janet was exiting the plane, Paula noticed a man directly behind her daughter dressed in feathers with exotic markings all over his body. Paula also noticed he was carrying a shrunken human head. Janet introduced this man as her new husband.
Paula gasped out loud in disbelief and disappointment and screamed, 'I said for you to marry a rich Doctor.....a rich doctor!'"

HISTORICAL FACTS FROM JANUARY 29 - FEBRUARY 4TH
January 29, 1919...........The 18th Amendment to the .S. Constitution (Prohibition Amendment) was ratified. For nearly 14 years, until December 5th, 1933, the manufacture, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverage were illegal in the United States. The Amendment had the unexpected result of causing enormous growth of organized crime which provided bootleg liquor to the thirsty.
January 30, 1835................President Andrew Jackson survived the first assassination attempt on the life of a U.S. President. While leaving the House of Representatives Chamber, an insane would be assassin fired two pistol shots at him, however both pistols misfired, and the President went unharmed.
January 31, 1945...............Eddie Slovik, a 24 year old U.S. Army private, was executed by a firing squad after being sentenced to death for desertion, the first such occurrence in the U. Army since the Civil War.
February 1, 2003.................Sixteen minutes before it was scheduled to land, the Space Shuttle "Columbus: broke apart in flight over west Texas, killing all seven crew members. The accident may have resulted from damage caused during liftoff when a piece of insulating foam from the external fuel tank broke off, piercing a hole in the shuttle's left wing that allowed hot gases to penetrate the wing upon re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. This was the second space shuttle lost in flight. In January 1986, "Challenger" exploded during takeoff.
February 2, 1848........The war between the U.S. and Mexico ended with the signing of the "Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo". In exchange for $15 million, the U.S. acquired the areas encompassing parts or all of present day California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Wyoming and Texas. The treaty was ratified on March 10, 1848.
February 3, 1913.........The 16th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified , granting Congress the authority to collect income taxes.
February 4, 1861............Apache chief Cochise was arrested in Arizona by the U.S. army for raiding a ranch. Cochise then escaped and declared war, beginning the period known as the Apache Wars, which lasted 25 years.
