OUR UPCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, AUGUST 20, 2015
Tracy Herman is bringing the program this coming Thursday. It promises to be one of great interest because it will cover a wide variety of subjects. Beverly Seffel, a seasoned Community Relations Specialist with a passion for helping nonprofits be successful and achieve their objectives, will be our speaker. Beverly is a long time Austinite with strong ties and relationships with the Business and Nonprofit community. She enjoys connecting organizations, individuals and funders in order to make a significant impact on Central Texas. She is experienced in Job Searches, finding the right person for the right position, accessing ability for organization to secure funding. She deals with special events, overseeing with organization staff events to increase funding, donors, and outreach program. One of her special interest is in the Project Healings Waters, of which are somewhat familiar, where disabled veterans of our Armed Forces are taught new skills through fly-fishing, giving them an opportunity to achieve a positive outlook on life and learn that even though they are disabled, there are people, organizations such as Healing Waters ready to step in and give them hope. Let's have a good turnout for this very challenging program.

 .jpg) A WALTER ZELLER AWARD PRESENTED TO PAM COOK
Last Thursday, August 13, Lt Gov Rob Martin & Lt. Gov Elect John Polk presented a Walter Zeller award to fellow club member, Pam Cook, in memory of her father. This award is given when an individual gives a one time gift of $1250 to The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis eliminating maternal and neonatal tetanus. By this monetary gift, 690 women and their future babies may be saved from excruciating death. Walter Zeller made the first gift to establish the Kiwanis International Foundation in 1940. To honor a kindred spirit of generosity, Walter Zeller Fellows receive a medallion, certificate and commemorative lapel pin. Most important of all, they help put MNT where it belongs in the medical history books. Each Zeller award that is given does a part to raise $110 million by the end of 2015....and to eliminate MNT from the face of the earth. Thank you Pam.

 We welcomed Trey Rios to our club as the guest of his mother, Marcie Burleson. Trey contributed a Happy Dollar for the Eliminate Project, because he was happy to be playing on the Pee Wee Colts Football team. He was selling BBQ tickets as a fundraiser for jerseys for the team. Those present bought all the tickets he had. He will make a good future Kiwanian. |

 LAST WEEK'S PROGRAM WAS A REAL WINNER
We had four of our club members bringing four different reflections on their attendance at this year's TX/OK District Convention, held in Texarkana, TX. All four felt like it lwas the best convention ever. Moe Johnson, next year's President gave an unexpected surprise regarding our club E-Bulletin. He said that of over 180 different clubs that submitted bulletins competitionm our bulletin was rated #2. Our editor was absolutely flabbergasted. We hope all those we send our bulletin to, do take the time to read it. We want to keep not just our active members up to date with what's going on, but also our inactive members and all of our friends. If you wouild like to be put on our mailing list, just email the editor at dbrown120@austin.rr.com, and we will see that you get one. Moe had many positive thing to say about the convention, and even though has been president of our club twice and Lt Governor, he feels that all incoming officers should attend one of these conventions.
Rob Martin, our current Lt. Governor was nominated to a new position that came about as a result one of the key District amendments being approved at the convention, namely restructuring of our District. At lthe top level of the District, we will have just 5 on the Governor's staff. Then under them, there will be 10 Trustees who share the responsibilities in the area of sponsored leadership, "The Formula" "Training" "Growth", "Education" "Risk Management", "Eliminate project" and "Marketing & commumication. The District will be broken down into ten regions, each having a Trustee guiding 3-4 Divisions and the clubs within those Divisions. Rob was nominated to be a Trustee for our Division 38, which has 8 clubs in, Division 23 which has clubs in an around the Waco area and Division 24 which has clubs around the Austin area. More on this later.
John Polk, who will be our new Division 38 Lt. Governor has already hit the road and visited clubs. This will be John's second go around as Lt Governor. He talked about what his priorities will be as Lt Governor. More on that later.
Frederick Case, former club president of our club and Lt. Governor is currently working as District Trustee for our District Foundation. He talked about that. We will be hearing from these four members from time to time. Let's give them whatever support they may seek.

"T hree economists and three mathematicians were going for a trip by train. Before the journey, the mathematicians bought 3 tickets but the
economists only bought one. The mathematicians were glad that their dumb colleagues were going to pay a fine. However, when the conductor was approaching their compartment, all three ecomomists went to the nearest rest room. The conductor, noticing that somebody was in the rest room, knocked on the door. In reply he saw a hand with one ticket. He checked it and the economists saved 2/3 of the ticket price. The next day, the mathematicians decided to use the same strategy - they bought only one ticket, but economists did not buy tickets at all! When the mathematicians saw the conductor, they hid in the rest roon, and when they heard knocking they handed in the ticket. They did not get it back. ....Why? The economists took it and went to the other rest room.

 KIWANIS SHIRTS TO BE PICKED UP!
Moe Johnson has informed all those who ordered new Kiwanis shirts that they have been picked up and will be available at the club meeting this coming Thursday, August 20. If you ordered some new shirts please be present to pick them up and settle up with Moe.

KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL HAS GIVEN US GREAT NEWS!!!
Indeed this is GREAT NEWS!...The Eliminate Project has reached $99 Million.
Our new total includes the Canadian government match and a record $7.5 million raised last weekend at the District Conventions. This is the most money Kiwanis International has raised in such a short amount of time.
The fundraising swept across Kiwanis during district conventions this past weekend (Aug. 6-8, 2015) Those conventions that met were Illinois-Eastern Iowa, Texas, Georgia, Montana and Southwest formalized commitments to reach their district goals.
This is an exciting and historic time for The Eliminate Project! Our victory over maternal & neonatal tetanus is not just achievable, it is inevitable.
Our collective efforts will help save or protect more than 55 million women and babies. That's enough children to fill 2.2 million kindergarten classrooms this fall.

 THE 2014-2015 GOVERNOR ELECT WAS INSTALLED AS GOVERNOR OF THE TX/OK DISTRICT.
Governor-Elect Erby Eikner was officially installed as new Governor of the TX/OK Kiwanis District effective Oct 1, 2015. His installation took place at the TX/OK District Convention held in Texarkana, August 6 - 8 of this year. He will serve through 2016. He is well qualified to be our next Governor. He is a current member of the Tyler Rose City Kiwanis Club, having served two terms as president, was distinguished Secretary, Treasurer, Chairman of annual fundraiser, chairman of Club BUG Program.
He was Lt Governor of Division 34 from 1997-1998, Chair of Division 34 PLGA. He has held the following Chair positions....Young Children Priority One, Children's Miracle Network, Interclubs. Served on the Board and as Treasurer of District PLGA...two terms, Texas-Oklahoma District Foundation Board (two years as secretary), served one term - District Long Range Planning Committee & one year as Chairman.
He has a Life Membership in the Texas Oklahoma Association; Life member of Past Lt Governors Association, George F. Hixson Fellow, C.T. Bush recipient, Walter Zeller Fellow - Diamond level, Brick participant for "Own Your Future Project at District Office.
He has been married to Francine for 43 years, they have two children and five grandchildren. He is currently employed as business manager at Maddox Residential & Commercial Services. He has served on the Board of Directors of Camp Tyler Foundation for 13 years and as President for four of those years. We welcome Governor and Mrs Eikner to our Division and District.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENED DURING THE WEEK OF AUGUST 14TH TO AUGUST 20.(Even though these events all happened in the past, because they did happen has and will continue to affect our lives where we are.)August 14, 1935.....President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act establishing the system which guarantees pensions to those who retire at age 65. The Social Security system also aids states in providing financial aid to dependent children, the blind and others, as well as administering a system of unemployment insurance.
August 15, 1969......Woodstock began in a field near Yasgur's Farm at Bethel, New York. The three day concert featured 24 rock bands and drew a crowd of more than 300,000 young people. The event came to symbolize the counter-culture movement of the 1960's.
August 16, 1977.......Elvis Presley was pronounced dead at the Memphis Baptist Hospital at 3:30p.m., at age 42.
August 17, 1943.......During World War II in Europe, the Allies completed the conquest of the island of Sicily after just 38 days. This gave the Allies control of the Mediterranean and also led to the downfall of Benito Mussolini and Italy's eventual withdrawal from the war. However, the Germans managed to evacuate 39, 569 troops, 47 tanks, 94 heavy guns, over 9,000 vehicles and 2,000 tons of ammunition back to the Italian mainland from Sicily.
August 18, 1920.......The 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote.
August 19, 1991.......Soviet hard-line Communists staged a coup, temporarily removing Mikhail Gorbachev from power. The coup failed within 72 hours as democratic reformer Boris Yeltsin rallied the Russian people. Yeltsin then became the leading power in the country. The Communist Party was soon banned and by December the Soviet Union itself disintegrated.
August 20, 1833.......Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President was born in North Bend, Ohio. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the 9th President.
