My apologies for the lateness of getting the newsletter out. A major allergy attack from mold, which is equivalent to having flu for me, knocked me out.
Guests and probable new members Emily Sousa and Cheryl Petre were at this meeting. It was good to see Andrew Gary again. We had quite a full house.
REPORTS:
Rhonda noted February birthdays for Stacie, James, Luanne, Penny and Willie. Cake will be served at the Feb. 15th meeting.
She went to the Hays County Livestock Show to purchase two projects for a total of $1500 on behalf of the Kiwanis club. This is an annual donation from the club.
The calendar is updated through March. Committee meetings can be put on the calendar if they so desire.
There is a new quiz at the end of this newsletter.
Lon also mentioned the continuation of committees taking turns giving 5 minute reports at the meetings so everyone will know what each committee's clear focus is and what has been accomplished, to date.
Glen announced his 6th donation received for Pancake Day. It is not reflected on this chart, yet. Folowing is the latest update:

Jeanne gave a most enthusiastic committee report on the Flag Program. There are 8 routes with 10 people doing the work. They get some help by paying boy scouts $2.00 for each flag they put out. The income from this program for 2023 was $3915. The projection for 2024 is over $5000 since La Cima is doubling its number of flags. They currently have 30 flags and want 28 more. There are more merchants wanting to participate, as well. The committee could really use more volunteers as the number of flags being requested is growing. Congratulations to Jeanne and the committee members for outstanding work.
PROGRAM:
Rhonda introduced Mark Andrews from the Hays County Sheriff's Office who gave us details of the Sunshine Kids program. This is a national program based in Houston. It was begun in 1982 by Rhoda Tomasco while serving as a volunteer in the pedriatic cancer unit in a Houston hospital. The purpose of the program is to have kids going through cancer treatments get a break just to have fun for a week and not worry about cancer. The children who can participate are ages 12-16. The Hays County Sheriff's Office with the HCCS Academy Alumni Assn. host the Sunshine Kids for the Texas Hill Country Adventure. Activities include Schlitterbahn, SeaWorld, rides in classic cars, the Hill Country Motorcycle Ride, and a trip to the State Capitol plus a Texas barbeque. The Alumni provides an ice cream social. An Ice Breaker game results in the kids going home with great prizes such as Apple watches. They average hosting 20-25 kids.
This is an amazing program for helping both the children and their families get a much needed break from the trials and trauma of dealing with cancer. Officer Andrew noted that the hardest part is getting attached to the kids.

Feb. 10th: Kyle 4H Fancy Feathers at the Dripping Springs Ranch Park Event Center. Although this is not a Kiwanis event, several members expressed interest in going. The show starts at 9:00 am.
Feb. 15th: Board meeting. Sunshine Bank. 5:00 pm.
