Just a reminder that Monday, January 21st is Martin Lutheran Day, and we need to put out flags on that day. Be at Ted's Electric by 7am on that day to put them out and then pick them up again between 4:30pm and 5:00pm
Our Program last week,
Our program last week was Mr. Ruben Garza from Southside Community Center in San Marcos . He was provided by Charles Walts. Ruben has been the Executive Director of Southside for over 28 years. During his tenure Southside has grown and now has a retirement center. The center provides affordable housing for seniors and services such as a free meal once a week, transportation to doctors, and grocery stores. Ruben was also instrumental in building over 200 more units of affordable housing. He oversees the Homeless shelter, affordable housing endeavors, Thrift Store and operation for Southside Commu9nity Center, and the Youth Service Program which provides after school activities for young students who need help. The Center is located at 518 S. Guadalupe St. in San Marcos.

January 11, 1954 - - The U.S. Surgeon General declared cigarettes may be hazardous to health, the first such official governmental report.
January 12, 1932 - - Hattie W. Caraway, a Democrat from Arkansas, was appointed to the U.S. Senate to fill the term of her deceased husband. Later in the year, she became the first woman elected to the Senate.
January 13, 1990 - - Douglas Wilder of Virginia became the first African American governor in the U.S., as he took the oath of office in Richmond.
January 14-23, 1943 - - President Franklin Roosevelt and British Prime Minister Winston Churchill met at Casablanca in Morocco to work on strategy during World War II. At the conclusion of the conference and Churchill held a joint news conference at which Roosevelt surprisingly announced that peace would come "by the total elimination of German and Japanese war power. That means the unconditional surrender of Germany, Italy, and Japan.
January 15, 1973 - - Golda Meir became the first Israeli Prime Minister to visit the Pope.
January 16, 1991 - - The war against Iraq began as Allied aircraft conducted a major raid against Iraqi air defenses. The air raid on Baghdad was broadcast live to a global audience by CNN correspondents as operation Desert Shield became Desert Storm.
January 17, 1966 - - A Hydrogen bomb accident occurred over Palomares, Spain, as an American B-52 jet collided with its refueling plane. Eight crewmen were killed and the bomber then released its H-bomb into the Atlantic.

What does it Mean to 'Pull Up Stakes?'
"To move from a place; change one's location. "What About the Hawaiian State Flag?
The flag of Hawaii was commissioned by King Kamehameha I of Hawaii in 1816. King Kamehameha I had unified the islands of Hawaii in 1810, using a schooner armed with a cannon. Before that time, each of the large islands had been a separate kingdom. The eight stripes white, red & blue represent the eight main islands of Hawaii. The Union Jack ( the flag of Great Britain) is in the upper left corner of Hawaii's flag, honoring Hawaii's long relationship with the British."
