"Oh drat it, foiled again!
What can you say, Gary Nelson's name was drawn and he wasn't there. It happens, but the amount in the jar is growing, so be sure and be there this coming Thursday....You might be a winner...Oh by the way, my name hasn't be drawn in a m i g h t y long time, in fact I can't remember if it has ever been drawn...Oh Well! Next week is always another time.
Welcome to our Guests last Thursday, September 8th.
We welcomed Sergio Portillo to our club meeting last week. He saw our display at the Embassy Suite Exposition, and Tracy Herman invited him to come enjoy lunch with us, and he did. We hope you will come back Sergio. Thank you for visiting us.
There will be a Board Meeting this coming Thursday Evening, September 15, held at Brookdale Senior Living Solutions. Time is 5:30pm.
Those on the Board are: Moe Johnson, Tracy Herman, Randy Cook, Glen Rydl, Del Brown (non voting), Ted Breihan, Lon Shell, Gary Nelson, Doug Balkman, Randal Grizzle. This will be the last Board Meeting before the election of the new officers and board members.
Our Program last Week.
Notice the color of this article. Look familiar. Yes it's the color of Texas State university. That was our program last week - Marcus Hendry - Facility Coordinator at Texas State. He filled our club in on all of the facility changes that are taking place at TSU, especially at Jowers Center. We know that there all sorts of reconstructing of parking, to include an overpass on Aquarena Springs Street, which is all part of an immense reconstruction project to accommodate more vehicles in parking lots. TSU is continuing to grow - about 39,000 students now, and it's not going to stop. The presentation and the question and answer session was very enlightening. Marcus is a very significant part of all of this reconstructuring process - and he even has his own parking spot. Thanks Steve and Marcus for a very wonderful and informative program.
For the Last Time, President Moe awards Kiwanis of the Month.
Since this will be the last time President Moe will have to award a special T-Shirt to a Kiwanian of the Monday, he did so in great style last Thursday when two persons were awarded this most appreciated token of Moe's appreciation of a job well done. For the month of September, Ted Breihan and Tracy Herman were honored. Ted, for his unwaveringly loyalty to our club, and helping in so many ways, both in an individual way as well as through his business. He has faithfully come down and helped the flag displayers and keeping the flags in his shop, and even though he doesn't deliver flags, our displayers could not do without his faithful support in so omany ways within our Club.
Also Tracy Herman was honored because of her untiring and excellent way in which she assisted the Chamber of Commerce in getting this year's Business Exposition to be a tremendous success. She is an Ambassador with the Chamber, and will be inducted into our Kiwanis club as it's next president on September 22. She is making arrangements at her workplace, Brookdale San Marcos North Senior Residential Center, to host our Installation Banquet on the 22nd. Congratulations to both Ted & Tracy.
"Our Program for Thursday, September 15th, 2016
Our program for this coming Thursday will be Charles Johnson, but instead of going off to some far away place, he is going to stay right here in San Marcos and bring us up to date with the Medical Explorers, of which he is very much involved. He also will probably be bringing some Scouts with him, so let's have a great turnout for Charles and his Explorers.
.Flags put out on Labor Day!
Sorry that this did not get in last week's bulletin, but I sent it out on Sunday rather than Monday. But we had a good crew turn out on Labor Day, and we thank each & every one who showed up to put up and to take down, since the weather decided to change later in the afternoon.
Labor Day is always the first Monday in September and is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.
Our Kiwanis members that turned out to help each other in putting up almost 80 some flags around our business community. They were: Glen Rydl, Francis Mendez, Randy Cook, Jude Prather, Gary Nelson, Randall Grizzle, Del Brown, Frederick Case, John Polk, Lon Shell. Moe Johnson, Garry White, Doug Balkman, Gary Strunk, James Collier, Charles Johnson, and Ted Breihan.Our flags are stored at Ted's and we really appreciate his generosity in keeping them there.
Putting Out Flags on 9/11 Day.
Our flag displayers had double duty this past week, putting up and taking down flags on Labor Day, and then coming out again this past Saturday,to put up flags in remembrance of the 9/11 Tragedy.
Those who put up flags on their single routes were Del Brown, Frederick Case, Lon Shell, Moe Johnson, James Collier, Doug Balkman, Gary Strunk, Gary Nelson and Randal Grizzle. Displaying on multiple routes were Francis Mendez and Garry White (3 routes). Randy Cook had to cover 2 routes, and many thanks goes out to Francis Mendez and Garry White for pitching in with helping Randy with his route and also helped with covering Charles Johnson's routes, because Charles was out of town with his Medical Explorers. Thanks to everyone who came out, and also for Ted Breihan who faithfully comes down and opened up his shop where we store the flags.

Team Dress identifies your club to the community and reminds people that your club is working to make the community a better place in which to live.
Your District Governor's Leadership may also have its own distinctive team dress. Lt. Governors (who represent the Governor in a local region of ten or so clubs (plus or minus) and District Chairs (who represent the Governor's interests across the District in specific programmatic areas) typically wear 'team dress' while acting in their official capacity. Team dress varies greatly from district to district, but it typically includes a distinctively colored blazer and, perhaps a Kiwanis necktie.
The array of team dress possibilities is especially apparent at the Kiwanis International convention where thousands of Kiwanians from all over the world gather annually."

Sonora Dodd decided in 1909 that she wanted to honor her father. A widowed man with six children, William Smart was a Civil War veteran who raised his children by himself on a rural farm in Washington State. As an adult, Sonora realized the selflessness and sacrifices her father made raising his family by himself. Her father was born in June, so she chose June 19, 1924 as the first Father's Day. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge supported the idea of a national day to honor fathers and, in 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation declaring the 3rd Sunday in June as Fathers Day.
