The newly organized Kyle/Buda Kiwanis Club is announcing their first fund Raiser and it will be held on Labor Day Weekend August 31-September 2 in Kyle, Texas. Last Week's Program
Our club held committee meetings last Thursday with combined committees dealing with Membership Growth, Webpage & Public Relations, and New Fundraisers Committee. In addition to table discussion on each of these subjects, Kim Hilsenbeck, the Kyle/Buda Club Publication chairwoman gave a talk on a fundraiser for their club, taking place over the Labor Day weekend and was soliciting volunteers from our club to help out.
Our Program for this coming Thursday, August 23rd 2018
Jeanne Balkman will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday. She will be bringing Deborah Carter, from the San Marcos Public Library. Her official title is Public Services Librarian, but she will be speaking specifically on Adult Programming at the Library. She has held this position since November 2016. Before coming to San Marcos, she was the Adult Literacy Specialist at the Sawn Antonio Public Library. She is well versed in several previous positions including Catholic Charities, Adult Educator for Community Action, Inc..
She received her Master's Degree in Adult & Continuing Education and Teaching from Texas State University and received another Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from Texas Woman's University.
This is a very exciting program, so let's have a good turnout.

John Polk, our Interclub chairman is announcing that we are getting up an Interclub meeting to the Lockhart Kiwanis club. The date and time will be this Tuesday, August 21st, and we will meet in the parking lot opposite the First United Methodist Church on Hutchinson Street at 11:15am. Hope to see some of you!

August 17, 1978 - - The first transatlantic balloon trip was completed by three Americans, Max Anderson, Ben Abruzzo, and Larry Newman, all from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Starting from Maine on August 11th, they traveled Double Eagle II over 3,000 miles in 137 hours, landing about 60 miles west of Paris.
August 18, 1920 - - The 19th Amendmen5t to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, granting women the right to vote.
August 19, 1991 - - Soviet hard-line Communists staged a coup, temporarily removing Mikhail Gorbachev from power. The coup failed within 72 hours as democratic reformer Boris Yeltsin rallied the Russian people. Yeltsin then became the leading power in the country. The Communist Party was soon banned and by December the Soviet Union itself disintegrated.
August 20, 1833 - - Benjamin Harrison, the 23rd President was born in North Bend, Ohio. He was the grandson of William Henry Harrison, the 9th President.
August 21, 1863 - - During the American Civil War, William Quantril led 450 irregular Confederate raiders on a pre-dawn terrorist rid of Lawrence, Kansas, leaving 150 civilians dead, 30 wounded and much of the town a smoking ruin. In 1862, Quantril had been denied a Confederate commission by the Confederate Secretary of War, who labeled Quantril's notions of war as 'barbarism.'
August 22, 1986 - - Deadly fumes from a volcanic eruption under Lake Nios in Cameroon killed more than 1,500 persons.
August 23, 1927 - - Italian immigrants Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti were electrocuted inside a prison at Charlestown, Massachusetts. They had been convicted of a shoe factory payroll robbery during which the paymaster and a guard had been killed. Following their convictions, all appeals for a new trial had failed, despite the lack of hard evidence and a later admission by a known criminal that he had participated in the robbery with an organized gang. The days and weeks leading up to their execution aroused worldwide protests amid accusations of unfair treatment because they had radical political views and were Italian.

"As odd as this seems, back in the old days most people weren't allowed credit. But, when someone did borrow, the records were often kept on the shirt cuff of the lender. When men traveled from town to town, the livery stableman often let them put what they owed on credit. There was no formal contract. But, it was written on the stable owner's cuff. So, guys who had debt owed to stables in different towns were said to live 'off the cuff.'
