The Fourth of July, is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago, on July 4, 1776.
the Continental Congress declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America and were no longer a part of the British Empire. The Congress actually voted to declare independence two days early, on July 2.
Flag Putter Outers: Be at Ted's Place by 7:00am on the 4th to put out your flags. Just a reminder, Randy is no longer coordinating our flag placements....We are looking for someone to take his place. Maybe you might like to step forward. Our Flag Distribution is a vital part of our club and needs to be kept going. Note:::If you haven't checked in with your route businesses to see whether or not they have renewed their flags for this year....PLEASE DO SO. If your flags are not renewed, then our Children's Summer Reading Program could be affected.
Boy, can you imagine this.....Lon Shell's name was drawn for Big Bucks, and he wasn't present. That's pretty unusual!
Last Week's Program, June 29, 2017
Jason Mock, current president of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce, gave a very thorough program bringing us all up on what's going on within our Chamber, and our club is beginning it's second year as a member of the Chamber. Our current president, Tracy Herman is also a member of the Ambassador Board, one of several boards within the Chamber. The Ambassador Club strengthens overall relationship with members by assisting with chamber events and creating awareness of the Chamber in the community.
Other Boards within the Chamber is Business Development Advisory Board, whose job it is to serve the small and minority owned businesses, working closely with all businesses and community leaders and other councils to determine and recommend appropriate subjects of training, information sharing and general business assessments.
Then there is the Education Committee, which addresses issues of educational progress in San Marcos by strengthening the liaisons between the business community and all available resources including the San Marcos Consolidated Independent School District and Texas State University.
The Government Committee reviews pending and existing legislation and regulations for their impact on business and develop positions that promote the overall best interests of our members.
The Sustainability Program Committee's job is to facilitate environmental stewardship and responsibility through education efforts and programs.
Then there is the Special Events Committee who works with the Chamber staff to organize major special fundraising events for the Chamber; increase profitability of special events and consider new events to meet program needs of the organization.
Thanks to Gary Strunk for bring Jason and wish the Chamber great success in the future through the cooperation of all of its members.
The Program for this coming Thursday, July 6th will be brought by Kelli Whigham. It will be a good 'in, believe me.
June 30, 1971......The 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was enacted, granting the right to vote in all federal, state and local elections to American citizens 18 years or older. The U.S. thus gained an additional 11 million voters. The minimum voting age in most states had been 21.
July 1, 1862......President Abraham Lincoln signed the first income tax bill, levying a 3% income tax on annual incomes of $5600-$10,000 and a 5% tax on incomes over $10,000. Also on this act, the Bureau of Internal Revenue was established by an Act of Congress.
July 2, 1788.......Congress announced rthe United States Constitution had been ratified by the required nine states and that a committee had been appointed to make preparations for the new American government.
July 3, 1988.........Iran Air Flight 655 was destroyed while flying over the Persian Gulf after the Navy Warship Vincesses fired two surface-to-air missiles, killing all 290 passengers aboard subsequent U.S. military inquiry cited stress related human failure for the mistaken identific of the civilian airbus as an enemy F-14 fighter jet.
July 4, 1882 .........The "Last Great Buffalo Hunt" began on Indian reservation lands near Hettin North Dakota as 2,000 Teton Sioux Indians in full hunting regalia killed about 5,000 buffaloes. At this time, most of the estimated 60-75 million buffalo in America had been killed by white hunters who usually took the hides and left the meat to rot. By 1883, the last of the free-ranging buffaloes were gone.
July 5, 1775.........The Continental Congress adopted the Olive Branch Petition expressing hope reconciliation with Britain. However, King George III refused even to look at the petition , and instead issued a Proclamation declaring the colonists to be in a state of open rebellion.
July 6, 1885.........Louis Pasteur gave the first successful anti-rabies inoculation to a boy who had been bitten by an infected dog.

"To Give (or get) the Third Degree"
One who is a member of a Lodge or Freemason knows so well the original meaning of this common expression that he will see little occasion for its inclusion here. But there are many who use it freely, however, who suppose it to have some connection with criminal law. Thus in the United States, a murder that is deliberate is called murder in the first degree. Wrongly, therefore, it is supposed that some form of crime is in the third degree.
Actually the term "third degree" has no connection with criminality or brutal treatment or mental torture. It refers to the third and final stage of proficiency demanded of one who seeks to become a Master Mason. In each of the two preceding stages or degrees certain tests of proficiency are required, but before the candidate is fully qualified for the third degree he must undergo a very elaborate and severe test of ability, not even faintly injurious, physically or mentally. It is from this examination that "third degree" became applied to the treatment of prisoners by the police, and it was through the fact that the police sometimes did employ brutality in efforts to extort confession or information that our present expression obtained its common modern meaning."

"The Cimarron National Grasslands. Kansas"
The Cimmaron National Grassland consists of 108,176 acres of Great Plains bisected by the Cimarron River The elevations on the Grasslands range from 3,100 to 3,700 feet. The terrain is mostly flat, sloping downward west to east, although bluffs rise about one hundred feet above the valley of the Cimarron. Vegetation is mostly short grass prairie grassland, dominated by sand sagebrush in salty soils. Groves of cottonwood and other trees are found near the river.
The present-day Cimarron National Grassland was the territory of the Commanche and other Indian tribes allied to them. In 1822, William Becknell was the first to traverse the Santa Fe Trail by wagon, pioneering the alternate route called the Cimarron Cutoff trail. In or near the Grassland, mountain man Jedediah Smith was killed by Commanches in 1831.
In 1879, the Beaty Brothers established Point of Rocks Ranch, the first in the area. Wheat farmers soon moved in and prospered in wet years, but the drought of the 1930's caused the Dust Bowl. Morton County, Kansas was the most devastated county in the nation. The Federal government bought land from bankrupt farmers, restored the original prairie, and in 1960 the Cimarron National Grassland was created. The grassland is dedicated to "water conservation, wildlife management, recreation, cattle grazing and mineral production.
