Don't forget December 8th is our Christmas Interclub . It will be held at Black's BBQ, off of Guadalupe Street. It will be at 12:00, everyone will go through the line and get what you want and pay as you go. There will be some Christmas entertainment. It will be lots of fun..
Terrific Kids Award Ceremony!
It's that time again when our Terrific Kids over at DeZavala Elementary School meets to hand out awards for being Terrific Kids. We will need about 10 Kiwanians to help with this on Thursday, December 8th at 2:00pm. You need to get to DeZavala school about 1:45, sign in at the office and then go to the Cafeteria. This is always a fun time for kids, teachers, and our club. Plan to help out.

"Committees in Kiwanis!
"The two most common Administrative Committees and their responsibilities are summarized below.
*The Club Meeting Committee arranges the most effective club meeting possible. Areas of responsibilities include arranging for speakers, music, special equipment needed, reception, fellowship and inter-club relations, as well as other areas which the committee finds appropriate.
(Some clubs have a Subcommittee on House and Arrangements to assure the availability of an appropriate meeting place and meal service. The Committee also arranges for preparation of the meeting place (such as the placement of banners, flags, podium, and lectern, bell etc.) It also provides any special arrangements needed by the day's speaker.{
The Committee on Membership Growth, Retention & Education works to maintain a membership capable of carrying out the programs of the Club. It reviews proposals for membership and submits its recommendations to the Board of Directors. The Committee also orients new members and inducts them into the Club.
Club presidents may create additional Special Committees (Fund Raising, Public Relations, etc.) to accommodate the needs of the club and the particular talents and interests of its members.
New Kiwanians sometimes ask if they are limited to working within the committee(s) to which they have been assigned. Of course not!. The work of some committees, for example, is seasonal and, at their peak, some projects may require "all hands on deck."
In summary, the committee structure is an administrative construct that facilitates the management of your club's many and diverse activities.
A final word of advice to New Kiwanians. Although the President of your club is probably diligent at being president, he or she, while attending to the many details of leadership, may sometimes overlook the assignment of new members to their committees. It is perfectly appropriate for you to suggest to the president a committee on which you think you'd be particularly interested in serving. He or she will surely accept your suggestion gladly . . . and there's no rule against changing your mind after awhile and shopping around for the committee that best suits your talents and interests.

December 1, 1941 - - The American Civil Air Patrol (CAP), a US Air Force auxillary, was founded as Director of Civilian Defense, former New York Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia signed the formal order. The CAP currently provides aerospace education, a CAP cadet program and emergency services as locating missing aircraft.
December 2, 1823 - - President James Monroe introduced his "Monroe Doctrine" during his annual message to the Congress, prohibiting any further colonization of the American continents by European powers, stating "We should consider any attempt on their part to extend their system to any portion of this hemisphere as dangerous to our peace and safety."
December 3, 1967 - - The first successful heart transplant was performed by Dr. Christian Bernard at Cape Town, South African, on Louis Washkansky, who lived for 18 days.
December 4, 1991 - - The last American hostage held in Lebanon was released. Journalist Terry Anderson of the Associated Press had been kidnapped on March 16, 1985 and held for 2,454 days by Islamic Jihad (Holy War) captors. He was one of 15 Americans held hostage for periods ranging from two months to more than six years. Three of the hostages, William Buckley, Peter Kilburn and Lieutenant Colonel William Higgins, were killed during their captivity. the others were released one or two at a time.
December 5, 1955 - - In Alabama, the Montgomery bus boycott began in response to the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusing to give up her seat on a municipal to a white man. Organized by the African American community, the boycott lasted until December 20, 1956, when a Supreme Court ruling integrated the public transportation system.
December 6, 1877 - - At his laboratory in West Orange, New Jersey, Thomas Edison spoke the children's verse "Mary Had a Little Lamb", while demonstrating his newly invented phonograph which utilized a revolving cylinder wrapped in tinfoil to record sounds.
December 7, 1941 - - The U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by nearly 200 Japanese aircraft in a raid that lasted ju9st over one hour and left nearly 3,000 Americans dead.

"America the Beautiful"
Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina is America's largest home. It includes a 255 room chateau, an award winning winery and extensive gardens. It is a large (6950.4 acre or 10.86 square miles) It is a private estate and tourist attraction in Asheville. The main house on the estate is a Chateauesque-styled mansion built by George Washington Vanderbilt between 1889 and 1895.It has 178,926 square feet of floor space, (135,280 square feet of living area) It is still owned by one of Vanderbilt's descendants. It stands today as one of the most prominent remaining examples of the Gilded Age.
