The club had a large contingent of Kyle 4H guests. Michelle Stange (on the far right) brought them to receive the club's donation of $250 towards their "Fancy Feathers" event in Feb. Her son Garrett thanked us for our support. It was great to have them come to the meeting.

REPORTS:
Lon said that Saturday is the day to winterize the camp plumbing before the cold front due in this weekend.
He noted that Rick's information for soliciting advertising for the "placemats" is now in printed form. The cut off date for getting advertisers is Feb. 29th.
Glen commended club members for reviving the Pancake meal event. He gave a list of businesses he has alreadly contacted for advertising so no duplication of efforts is made.
Kristin reported that there will be a Supper Social at Ivar's River Pub on Wed. Jan. 24th at 6:00 pm.
Rhonda said there are three members' birthdays this month being celebrated next Thurs. Jan. 18th. She also said the January calendar is posted on the San Marcos Club website.
PROGRAM:
Moe introduced Joey Harkwriter who is the sales representative and public relations person for Green Guy Recycling. Moe also did most of this write up about Joey's presentation to our meeting. Joey has been with Green Guy for seven years. Green Guy has 33 employees working to recycle material dropped off by residents of San Marcos and surrounding areas. It is the only recycling operation in this area. San Antonio and Austin may be the only other areas that have recycling. The contract between the city of San Marcos and Green Guy helps keep a recycling project strong. It started in 1995 as a small recycling operation of paper and aluminum cans. It has since grown to several large buildings with huge drop off bins for paper, cardboard, plastic and aluminum with easy drive up for residents to drop off their recycling materials. The extent of materials Green Guy recycles includes a wide variety such as scrap metal, batteries, TV’s, electronics, and appliances such as freezers and stoves, (best to drain the Freon out first). Even old cars, with their title, are among the many items Green Guy can recycle. The charge for some of the items is minimal such as for mattresses. Green Guy will pay in cash for material like scrap metal,
aluminum and copper once a certain weight is met. It was a very informative and interesting program. One point Joey brought out was the lack of knowledge about Green Guy recycling in San Marcos. They are starting a program for making their services and location more available to people in San Marcos. Moe remarked that is the same problem Kiwanis is facing and with more visibility and information about Green Guy and Kiwanis it is hoped both will grow and prosper.
