Last Week's Program
Last Weeks program, brought by our own member, Gary Nelson, was a tremendous one from the standpoint of trying to understand the many different changes that are taking place within the Health Care System. For several years, Gary held the position of Vice-President at CTMC here in San Marcos, and while holding that position, he was very instigational in bringing new physicians into CTMC. He has seen, looking back over the past years, that there are many new changes in our Health Care System. I can not begin to tell you half of all of the details that Gary brought up, but to quote "it isn't like it used to be. Since retiring from CTMC, Gary has never stopped working for the good of humanity, especially in the field of building ramps for the handicapped. I can't begin to tell you how many ramps, he and those who have helped him have built just this year. Gary's program last week, was pretty much right off the cuff of his experience, and the most we can do is to just wait and see how the changes in health care will affect us in the future. Thanks Gary for filling us in on the latest.

Welcome to our latest new member.
Last Thursday, we were overjoyed to receive JEANNE BALKMAN (wife of our current president) into full membership in our club. Jeanne is no stranger to our club, and has been a big help this past year (and even before that) in many of our projects. John Polk, former Lt Governor did the inducting of Jeanne, and her husband was proud to present her with a new membership pin. Congratulations Jeanne. We welcome you with open arms.
Farewell to a top notch waitress and a good friend!
All good things sometimes have to come to an end, so that better things ahead can be realized. That's how our noon club felt about losing 'Bobbie' our faithful waitress. We have had nothing but the finest service on Bobbie's part there at Grin's restaurant, but more than being a waitress, she had become a very wonderful friend to our entire club. We will miss her very much as she steps up to being a waitress over at Saltgrass. Bobbie is a student at Texas State, but will be graduating soon. She has a great mind and could relate to all of our members. There are waitresses who just serve the meal, but Bobbie was a real friend to all our members. Again, let me say, we will miss her very much. We all passed the hat and gave her some 'sendoff' $$$, which I am sure she will need and was most appreciative.

June 1, 1801 - - The founder of Utah and patriarch of the Mormon church, Brigham Young was born in Whittingham, Vermont. Called the 'American Moses,' he led thousands of religious followers across the wilderness to settle over 300 towns in the West, including Salt Lake City, Utah.
June 2, 1740- - Marquis de Sade was born in Paris. He was a military leader, governor-general, and author, whose acts of extreme cruelty and violence resulted in the term sadism being created from his name to describe gratification in inflicting pain.
June 3, 1972 - - Sally Jan Priesand was ordained a rabbi thus becoming the first woman rabbi in the United States. She then became an assistant rabbi at the Stephen Wise Free Synagogue in New York, City.
June 4, 1944 - -During World War II in Europe, Rome was liberated by the U.S. 5th Army, led by General Mark Clark. Rome had been declared an open city by German Field Marshal Albert Kesselring amid Allied concerns the Germans might stage a Stalingrad-style defense that would devastate the historic 'Eternal' city.
June 5, 1783 - - The first sustained flight occurred as a hot-air balloon was launched at Annonay, France, by brothers Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier. Their 33 foot-diameter globe aerostatique ascended about 6,000 feet. In September, they repeated the experiment for King Louis XVI, using a sheep, rooster and duck as the balloon's passengers.
June 6, 1872 - - Pioneering feminist Susan B. Anthony was fined for voting in a presidential election at Rochester, New York. After voting rights had been granted to African American males by the 15th Amendment, she attempted to extend the same rights to women. She led a group of women that voted illegally, to test their status as citizens. She was arrested, tried and sentenced to pay $100, which she refused. Following her death ion 1906 after five decades of tireless work, the Democratic and Republican parties both endorsed women's right to vote. In August of 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was finally ratified, allowing women to vote.
June 7, 1965 - - The U.S. Supreme Court struck down a Connecticut law banning contraception. In Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court guaranteed the right to privacy, including freedom from government intrusion into matters of birth control.

"For some odd reason, the number 9 has always been considered by mathematicians to have some super power?. Some say it goes back to the Holy Trinity since 3X3+ 9. And later in Victorian times, a person who was all dressed up was said to be dressed to the nines." So what does this have to do with clouds?
It was believed that clouds existed on a successful level of layers, and the ultimate high layer was 9. So anyone who is suddenly super happy was said to be soaring in the clouds and naturally the level of the cloud they were assumed to be on was the highest....level 9. Today another way of saying you are very happy and even in some cases, in love, is to say that you are on cloud 9.

America The Beautiful.... Perfection Lake, Washington.
Perfection Falls is the first significant waterfall found along Snow Creek as it tumbles through the Enchantments on its way down to join Icicle Creek near Leavenworth. The falls occur between Inspiration and Perfection lakes in the Enchantment Lakes Basin and are easily visible from the Snow Creek trail where it wraps around the north end of Perfection Lake. The Falls drop in two distinct steps, first sliding down an incline for about 20 feet and then running through a fractured outcrop and splitting into multiple channels which plunge directly into Perfection Lake in a very fountain-like display.
Though Snow Creek is a perennial stream fed by the ever dwindling Snow Creek Glaciers, as well as a half dozen significant lakes in the upper Enchantment Basin, the volume of water present in the creek where the falls occur will diminish significantly as the seasons progress. Heavy snow during the winter will ensure the falls are quite rambunctious during the first half of the summer, but by September the volume drops considerably and the falls become much less visually impactful.
