Sorry, but the Big Bucks jar gets more money put in it. Moe Johnson had his name drawn, but he was not present. He was getting ready to have hip surgery the next day.
Final Tally for this year's Pancake Day and Silent Auction......
Charles Johnson passed out the final tally on this y ear's Pancake and Silent Auction, and it was a good one. We had almost 100% participation of members, plus Medical Explorers, plus K-Kids from DeZavala, and Salvation Army volunteers. We had a subtotal income of $9,634, including ticket sales, Auction and Pancake Sales,Auction checks, Auction Credit, Donations, Mix Refund. Sale of Sausage/Mix sale to members.
The overall expenses came to $2,061.97 which included cash to start with Supplies, such as bowls and tools, signs Activity Center rental, newspaper, and thank you letter postage and Credit Card fees came to $2,0561.97. That gives a grand Total Profit of $7,572.25.
We served a grand total of 294 people. All in all, many members felt it was the best event we have had, considering some basic changes from years past. Thanks to everyone who made it possible, especially all of the community citizens that came, ate, purchased auction items and had a great time in conversation with each other.
Three attend K-Kid's Meeting!
Three members, Randy Cook, Chester Banks and Del Brown attended the K-Kid's meeting with their sponsor, Brittany Bouzard. We are so fortunate to have Brittany leading this group, and she is so passionate about these children. She teaches 1st Grade and you can see by the photo, that she was given the award of Teacher of the Year for 2016-2017. They are planning at least two special events in the very near future, "Fitness Day" , which will be on Saturday, May 20th, held in the gym and Cafeteria. This will be a fun time, and they possibly might use a little help from our club in the way of people helping out. More later. There are other activities being considered, but nothing specifically fleshed out. Will keep everyone up to date
Our Program for this coming Thursday, April 13, 2017.
Glen Rydl will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday. She is Diane Insley, General Manager of the San Marcos Public Library. Her subject will be to discuss the renovation and improvements that are being discussed of the Library.
"Do what you love. Find a job that you find rewarding and make a difference in your community".
That is Diane;s philosophy. She has worked for 28 years at the San Marcos Public Library, Reference Librarian, Special Services and Outreach Manager, Public Service Manager before she was appointed Library Director in 2015. She manages a 1.5 million dollar budget and has a staff that includes eight professional librarians, six full time paraprofessionals and twelve part time clerks.
Diane loves and is passionate about her job because of 'the people' she enjoys the public service part of being a librarian the best. Inspiring children to be readers, providing educational opportunities for people of all ages, preserving local history, creating a great space to read, meet, use technology and explore. She loves seeing the babies come in for a lap-sit storytime and likes opening the door for a senior citizen using a walker.
Be sure and come hear her talk about the expansion plans that are in the mill for the library. Let's have a great crowd for Diane.
Two of our club members have undergone hip surgery in the last week. Moe Johnson had surgery last week and Chester Banks will undergo surgery on Monday, May 10th. Let's keep them in our prayers and wish them speedy recovery./
On Friday, May 19th, our Club will be providing lunch at the Cock House. More information will follow.

April 7, 1712 - In New York City, 27 black slaves rebelled, shooting nine whites as they attempted to put out a fire started by the slaves. The state militia was called out to capture the rebels. Twenty one of the slaves were executed and six committed suicide.
April 8, 1952 - President Harry S. Truman seized control of America's steel mills to prevent a shutdown by strikers. However on April 29th, the seizure was ruled unconstitutional by a U.S. District Court. Workers immediately began a strike lasting 53 days, ending it when they received a 16-cents per hour wage increase and additional benefits.
April 9, 1865 - After over 500,000 American deaths, the Civil War effectively ended as General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant in the village of Appomattox Court House. The surrender occurred in the home of Wilmer McLean. Terms of the surrender, written by General Grant, allowed Confederates to keep their horses and return home. Officers were allowed to keep their swords and side arms.
April 10, 1998 - Politicians in Northern Ireland reached an agreement aimed at ending 30 years of violence which had claimed over 3,400 lives. Under the agreement, Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland would govern together in a new 108-member Belfast assembly, thus ending 26 years of "direct rule" from London.
April 11, 1970 - Apollo 13 was launched from Cape Kennedy at 2:13 pm. Fifty-six hours into the flight an oxygen tank exploded in the service module. Astronaut John L. Swigert saw a warning light that accompanied the bang and said, "Houston, we've had a problem here." Swigert, James a Lovell and Fred W. Haise then transferred into the lunar module, using it as a 'lifeboat' and began a perilous return trip to Earth, splashing down safely on April 17th.
April 12, 1861 - The American Civil War began as Confederate troops under the command of General Pierre Beauregard opened fire at 4:30 a.m. on Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina.

Yosemite National Park is a national park spanning portions of Tuolumne, Mariposa and Madera counties in Northern California. The park which is managed by the National Park Service covers an area of 747,956 acres and reaches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. On average, about 4 million people visit Yosemite each year, and most spend the majority of their time in the seven square miles of Yosemite Valley. The park set a visitation record in 2016, surpassing 5 million visitors for the first time in its history.
Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, lakes, mountains, glaciers, and biological diversity.
Almost 95% of the park is designated wilderness and is one of the largest and least fragmented habitat blocks in the Sierra Nevada, and the park supports a diversity of plants and animals. The park has an elevation range from 2,127 to 13,114 feet and contains five major vegetation zones: chaparral/oak woodland, lower montane forest, upper montane forest, subalpine zone, and alpine.
