This newsletter is a first attempt at using a Bulletin template in ClubRunner. It is very much a work in progress subject to change. Suggestions are welcome.
GUESTS:
Glen Rydl had his daughter Louise and her husband Jim as his guests for this meeting. Stacie, who will be inducted as a new member, and Andrew Gary also attended along with a good number of regular members.
REPORTS:
Glen said another scholarship plaque named after his wife Mary Lou was awarded to a student recently. These awards were started in 1978.
Rhonda read off birthdays that are listed on the Nov. calendar and noted that they will be celebrated next Thursday. She mentioned the Social on the 15th at the Outback at 6:00. Please RSVP to Kelli or Rhonda if you want to go and were not at the meeting to let her know in person.
Kelli reported again that those wanting to go to the Interclub meeting in Marble Falls should meet at Lowe's at 10:15 in front of the garden center.
Lon reminded everyone that there is a board meeting at 5:00 p.m. at Sunflower Bank.
He reported that Moe will be inducting three new members.
He would like to go over committees next week and said that the meeting will be a ClubRunner lesson on using that site.
Jeanne said the flags are going up on Friday prior to Saturday's Veteran's Day Parade. The flags should be taken down Saturday evening.
Lon and Rick will be repairing and improving the float for the parade. They will bring the tractor and float to the parade line up to decorate. Doug is picking up the bikes from Academy which will be given to two lucky children. More to follow on this as Moe has written a great accounting of the parade proceedings which are included in this newsletter.
PROGRAM:
Kelli again showed, but to a much larger audience this time, a wonderful compilation she created of our club activities starting with the Installation Banquet. It showed how busy we have already been at the beginning of our new year.
UPCOMING PROGRAMS:
Nov. 16: Jennifer will show how to get on the San Marcos Kiwanis website and from there how to log in to ClubRunner with an overview of what resources are available as well as how to write emails from this site. A cheat sheet will be sent out via email before the meeting. Once you do it a couple of times, it really is easy. I promise!
Nov. 23: Thanksgiving. No program.
Nov. 30: Brown Santa. Donations of toys will be welcomed.
EVENTS:

Nov. 11: Veteran's Day Parade starts at 10:00 a.m.

Moe's write-up of the Veteran's Day Parade:
KIWANIS VETERANS DAY PREPARATION AND PARADE:
With some necessary work to be done on the float before the Veteran's Day Parade, Lon, Rick, and Moe met for a few hours on three days during the week to see if we could improve the framework on the float. Instead of screwing in the different pieces of wood to make the frame Lon suggested bolting the pieces together. We drilled holes for the bolts and inserted a bolt and nut instead of screwing them together. The idea was that it would be easier to put it together next year and easier to take apart this year. The benches needed cleaning up and some painting to look better. Lon got one bench started but we will need to take some time to paint the longer benches. Any volunteers that have painting skills should contact Lon for time and place to work on them.
PARADE DAY: A good number of members showed up to decorate the float with patriotic banners and photos of our club members that are veterans. Rhonda brought some doughnuts for energy for the workers. After the decorations were put up and tied down the float was ready to go. The group split into two units with one group going with Lon and the float to the starting position in the parade (we were #9). It looks better if some people rode on the float to wave to the spectators. The other group went to the courthouse square to help decorate the kid's bikes and encourage some kids to ride behind the float when it came by the courthouse block. Some members walked the crowd to find youngsters to sign up for thebike drawing after the parade. The bike brigade had Kristin, Jeanne, Jim Collier, Jesse, Rick, and Moe to organize the bike brigade and bike drawing. When our float came by, we herded about 8 children behind the float to ride part of the parade. We even had a stroller be part of the group. And one child and his Dad had a dog with them to walk the block. The kids were all smiles as they rode by the spectators cheering them on. All in all, "WE LOOKED GOOD".
DRAWING FOR THE BIKES: Jeanne and Rick drew names for the bikes. Unfortunately, the children were not present at the drawing. So, Jeanne had to call them on the phone to let them know they were winners of the bike. The little girl showed up within 10 minutes for her bike. We took some photos of the girl and her bike with a few Kiwanis members behind her. The young boy will pick his bike up later.
DISMANTLING THE FLOAT: After the decorations were taken off at Ted's place the float was driven to the warehouse storage building. With Lon, Rick, Moe, Jesse, Steve, John and his son Joseph, and Jim working together the idea of putting the float frame together with bolts proved successful. With about three or four wrenches to unscrew the bolts the frame was dismantled and stored in the warehouse in about 30 minutes. Nothing like teamwork to get things done quickly and efficiently. Since each of the pieces are labeled for position on the float assembly next year should be relatively easy and faster.
KIWANIS VETERAN'S DAY PARADE REWARD: After the parade and putting up the float some members went to lunch at Juliannias out on Hwy. 123. It was a nice group to talk over the parade day and the food was very good. Moe was given a hard time with his order of a 'Super Taco' that was as large as his plate. Bets were taken to see if he could eat it all. After a difficult time with two glasses of sweet, iced tea to help with the task he did manage to eat it all. He will not have to eat anything for the next few days waiting for the Super Taco to digest.
Due to the length of this newsletter, I will let Moe's "Super Taco" story fulfill the "Humor and Musings" section.
