San Marcos Kiwanis Club Newsletter, Sept. 26, 2024
Rick, as the new President, took over the honors of opening the meeting today. His first comment was to say how good the Installation Banquet was this year. He mentioned that new Key Club members attended which the club has not had happen in a while. He praised all of those who put the event together and helped with set up and take down. The food was great and it made for a much more relaxing event to have serving and kitchen clean up done by the caterers. Lon put together a powerpoint with a brief history of the last 50 years and the past year's accomplishments. He showed the special award he gave to all of our Honorary Members at the banquet.

This was the day to celebrate September birthdays for Emily, Billy and McBride Wilson. Jennifer brought home baked brownies and Kristi provided cake balls in autumnal colors with the delightful Fall spices of ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg with a pumpkin base.

Rick noted the following:
Today is -
National Pancake Day is celebrated on September 26, 2024.
IHOP's National Pancake Day is celebrated on Feb. 13, 2024
National Day of praise and worship.
Johnny Appleseed Day

Remember October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Rick encouraged members to wear pink at the Oct. 3rd meeting.

Dr. Vanessa Westbrook was a guest at this meeting. She has been a 20 year member in Kiwanis and wants to join our Club by transferring from the Kyle/Buda Kiwanis Club. She is the Kiwanis Key Club District Advisor.

Induction of Susie Hernandez and Veronica Medina
Jesse performed the Induction ceremony for our newest members.

Susie is married to Steven and they have two children. She is involved with the Chamber of Commerce and is Bowie PTO President. She works with "Fresh Journey Counseling" and would like to work with Kiwanis Sponsored Youth programs which is wonderful as the club is working diligently towards increasing our involvement with these programs.

Veronica works with the Hays Caldwell Women's Center. She was in Circle K while in college. Her skill sets are Social Media, event planning, youth mentoring, PR, fundraising, and recruitment. She has not chosen a committee to work on yet, but with her skill sets she will be a great help in whatever she decides to do.

Welcome to the club!

Oct. 19th: Pumpkin Dash. Moee gave an update and passed around information on how to run a race. He went over details including snacks provided for runners. La Cima has given a $1000 donation and Jesse has received several other donations from sponsors. We could use more. Members can buy a Pumpkin Dash shirt for $20. The race will start at the La Cima activity center. Arrival time is 6:30 a.m. for setting up. Moe thinks 10 volunteers will be able to get it done. La Cima has a contract with law enforcement so they will provide safety support.

Oct. 29th: We have a table at the Kissing Tree Vendor Fair. Jesse has taken charge with Veronica, Billy and Cheryl helping. He is providing his photo booth which should be a hit, as always. The $100 fee was waived due his bringing the photo booth.

Rick encouraged the members to get involved with School Fuel by volunteering to pack the food bags on Thursdays at Mendez Elementary at 5:00 p.m. weekly. There is a sign up sheet online. https://www.schoolfuelsanmarcos.org/volunteer
He noted that $230 feeds one child's weekend food for one year.
