A RETIREMENT JOKE: "This fellow and his wife had come to town to pick up a few things. They came out of one store and saw a cop writing a ticket for illegal parking right in front of them on the curb. So they asked him nicely to give a couple of retirees a break. But he paid them no attention and kept writing. Just loud enough for him to hear, the wife said, 'What a Bozo'. The cop looked up, stared at the wife, then started writing out a second ticket. The husband said, 'Honey, this guy probably just learned to read and write, and he's so proud of himself, he's showing off.' The cop tore off the 2nd ticket and started in on a third. The couple kept making comments and he kept writing tickets till he was up to about half a dozen. Finally glaring at us, the cop left, and the couple walked on down the street. You see, they didn't care about the tickets. They always took the bus into town, and anyway, that car was one of those obnoxious Hummers. Being retired, people always try to find ways to keep themselves amused. They feel it is important."

Several weeks ago, at a club meeting, President Del suggested another way to donate to the Eliminate Project was to distribute plastic baby bottles to whoever wanted them The idea was to fill those bottles with sparechange from home, and then bring them to club meeting, where Pam Cook graciously volunteered to take them and deposit them and then after a period of time, Randy would write a check as another donation to the Eliminate Project. So far, 4 or 5 have brought their bottles in and to date $102,27 has been collected. Wonderful! Great! Congratulations to you all. More will be coming in I am sure. Also, since we have been collecting Happy Dollars each week, a total of $212.00 has been collected, and this too will be donated to the Elinminate Project. Your editor has discovered that each week, several members have had reason to be happy about something. Let's keep our club a happy one! Doesn't it make you feel good inside? Our club is like a big family. When one of our members is hurting, we should extend our help and remember that person in prayer. John Polk's great grandson, Roland, 2 1/2 years old underwent a fairly extensive surgeon to remove a tumor on his brain. He was in the operating room at Dell's Children's hospital for almost 8 hours. The surgery was successful and they were sure they got it all, but the pathological report will not be available for about a week, so let's keep John and Mary and their family in prayer that everything will turn out OK.

It's that time of year again. Each fall we stop and think about the harvest and all we have to be thankful for. The farmers always stopped and looked at the bountiful harvest at the end of the long summer and gave thanks to God for helping them.
We too need to stop and give thanks to God for all He has given us. We are blessed. Everything we want may not be in our houses, but we need to be thankful. David said in the Bible: "I will thank you, Lord, with all my heart. I will tell of all the marvelous things you have done. I will be filled with joy because of you. I will sing praises to your name, O Most High." (Psalm 9:1-2).
God loves to hear us. He takes great pleasure in receiving our thanks and our love. He cares so deeply about everything that affects our lives. Talk to Him. Tell Him whatever is on your heart. He understands and wants to meet your needs.
Our club will be having a Christmas Luncheon on Thursday, December 11th at the San Marcos BBQ, located at 2601 Hunter Road. It has just been refurbished and serves excellent food. Gary Strunk has checked this out, has eaten there as well as have several other members, myself included. It has a separate meeting room with tables to seat at least 80 persons. We have invited other members of the other clubs in our Division, to join us and make it an Interclub, but have had no response as of yet. The cost will be $8.25 plus tax, and you can pay at the counter. Since this is our Christmas luncheon, we are working on having appropriate Christmas entertainment. Plan on coming. We will be passing around a sheet for you to sign up at our meeting on December 4th, and how many you are bringing with you.
"In trying to live up to its motto of "WE BUILD", our club in the past as in the present has always given a central role to its work with children and youth
, both to those with special needs and to the group in general. Two of the most active committees over the years have been those
for Boys and Girls Work, andforUnderprivileged Children. These later were incorporated into one committee, and most recently have been included, together with the former committee on Vocational Guidance.
In the early days, many individual services were paid for. There were numerous tonsilectomies recorded, as well as other operations. Two notable ones which were successful were for cleft palate, another for crossed eyes. The records are filled with notations of $40, $45, $52,, $100 for operations.....A series of treatments was paid for an epileptic child ($160).....Rental was paid for an iron lung for a needy person.....There were numerous recordings of dental services.....Glasses were provided for many youngsters....One needy athlete was provided with contact lenses, for $55.....Payment was made to an optometrist for a series of eye exercises for a child......These are just a few.....Watch for more next week!
The program for Thursday, December 4th will be brought by Gary Nelson. His speaker will be Dr. Anthony Cedrone, MD. Dr. Cedrone received his medical degree from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. He served his internship and residency in Internal Medicine at North Shore University Hospital and was active on the Resident Committee Faculty Advisory Committee and Medicine Continuity Clinic Committee. He completed his fellowship in Cardiology from North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System in Manhasset, NY. His areas of special interest include structural heart disease. He is Board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases, Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiography, Internal Medicine. When he is not working, he enjoys time with his family and playing golf.
