Congratulations!                    Youssef Omar, our third scholarship recipient, came with his mother to give us an accounting of what he will be pursuing at Carnegie Mellon University with plans of a startup AI.

 

Birthdays celebrated this month are Vanessa, Moe and Glen. Lon and Phyllis Shell and McBride and Elsie Wilson are celebrating anniversaries.

 

Vanessa is home from the hospital after a car accident. She will be taking about a month off in order to have a complete recovery. We wish her well.

The Great Pumpkin Dash is moving right along with sponsors signing up with monetary donations and lots of sunscreen for gift bags.

 

An update on the Sept. Installation banquet is we will have San Marcos BBQ cater again with pork chops as the main course.

 

The San Marcos Business Expo is on Aug. 28th, a Thursday, from 10:00 -2:00. We will need to coordinate members going to this as it falls on the same day as our regular meeting. 

 

PROGRAM: John Maberry, who serves as Managing Partner of Highlander Real Estate Partners, gave a presentation about the Hihland SM One, LLC seeking to build a 199 acre Data Center in San Marcos at 904 Francis Harris Lane. Due to misinformation circulating around Data Centers and their impacts, this has been a challenging endeavor. Major areas have been water, energy usage, noise pollution, and broad environmental concerns. For instance, the water consumption for keeping server racks cool was thought to be high. However, data uses much less water than a typical residential neighborhood and the water used will be via a closed loop method. The buildings will be state-of-the-art with low traffic volume, no active warehouse and no loading docks. John said the facilities will bring in more jobs for the community, especially in construction.

Virginia Parker, Executive Director of the San Marcos River Foundation, is keeping up with developments in the approval process for all Data Center proposals.

 

 

EVENTS: 

Aug. 12th: Cheer on San Marcos Baptist Academy students on their first day of class. 7:00 am.

Aug. 15th: Camp Workday starting at 9:00 am. Mowing, tree trimming and general cleanup. Pole limb trimmers are needed. Come see the improvements and work if you can. If you can't do the physical work, come enjoy the camp, cheer the workers on and maybe bring snacks to share. All are welcome.

Aug.18th: Kiwanis regular meeting to be on Monday at 6:00 pm at Grins instead of Thursday at noon.
