Thank you, John Polk for bringing a great program last week.
You know what the great thing about having a program every week at our Noon Club meetings, is the great variety of talent that is in our city. John Polk brought Thomas Fortney, curator over at "Dick's Classic Car Garage", and what great information he gave us. Tom has been with Dick's for 11 years, is married with 3 children. He is currently working on a degree in American History. Dick's Classic Garage is a non profit organization and currently they have 80 classic cars on display, including a replica of the batmobile. The one thing that was so interesting was his knowledge of automotives, which he says, everyone should have some knowledge of this important feature. He said that you just don't see old cars on the road anymore, and so many are just being forgotten. Dick's Garage has both 'original cars' as well as 'restored' cars. Dick's Garage is also the site for many, many, community activities. If you haven't been out there, by all means pay a visit. It's right off of Hunter Road at 120 Stagecoach Trail, San Marcos.

Andrew Liguez brought himself. He is currently one of the 8 International Trustees for Circle K, the Kiwanis club formed in college and universities. There are plans afoot to reorganize a Circle K Club at Texas State. Their application is in and being reviewed, We welcomed Andrew.
"Board Action of July 21, 2016
Our Board of Directors met on July 21, 2016 at Brookdale San Marcos North. The following members were present:
Moe Johnson, Randy Cook, Gary Nelson, Glen Rydl, Lon Shell and Charles Johnson (Investment Advisor).
The Minutes of the last meeting were read and approved. The Treasurer's Report was read and approved.
The following business discussed was as follows:
1. Charles Johnson, Investment Advisor, advised the Board that the Club's invested stocks were holding steady.\
2. Gary Nelson mentioned that arrangement has been made for the Kiwanis Club to move their elongings back into the warehouse located on Hwy 621 (the site where the Kiwanis Club was once very active in building modules for handicap ramps. This frees up the 10X10 storage building at Tom Thumb and saves the Club $50.00 a month.
3. There will be a Round Table at Grin's on Thursday, September 1, 2016, the same day as the Business Expo for the Chamber of Commerce. Shifts will be assigned for attendance at the Expo to be held at the Embassy Suite.
4. The Annual Installation Banquet will be held September 22, 2016 at Brookdale San Marcos North, 1720 Old RR 12. More details will follow.
5. Following a discussion on the need for a new lawn mower and other materials at the Kiwanis Camp, Lon Shell made a motion for the club to purchase 2 steel doors (approx. $100 each) and look at Gary Nelson's lawn mower (approx. $600.00) and Brush Hog (approx. $300.00) Randy Cook seconded this motion and it carried.
6. No further business, a motion was made by Glen Rydl to adjourn and seconded by Lon Shell. The adjournment cam at 7pm.
We had a winner for Big Bucks last Thursday. It was John Polk. I think there was $4 in the jar, anyway, he gave it to the Eliminate Project.

Our Program for this coming Thursday, August 4, 2016
Our program this coming Thursday is going to be a very unusual one. Garry White had the unique opportunity to ride aboard a nuclear submarine recently and he wants to tell us all about it. I have never been on a sub, and frankly the whole idea sort of gives me some qualms about it, but you know that in the past Garry has shared many of his unusual adventures that he has been privileged to engage in. Let's have a great turnout and hear Garry's personal reaction to this very unique adventure.

Kiwanis International.....and Kiwanians' dues are paid to the club they belong to, not to their division, district, or Kiwanis International. A typical Kiwanis club has 30-40 members although there is enormous variability in size. A few clubs number fewer than 10 members and the largest, with more than 500 members, is larger than most divisions.
Each club consists of several committees.....except for their weekly meetings and a few social functions, the 'real work' of clubs happens in Committees. They are so important that Kiwanis requires that every club have certain Standing Committees.....
Your club is a corporation - - a non profit corporation - - but its donors (at least in the US) do not enjoy the privilege of deducting their contributions to is. For this reason some clubs have formed tax-deductible foundations to receive donations from members and the public, Very strict accounting and reporting rules apply to such foundations and clubs don't create foundations lightly.

It's Time Again to Begin Thinking about The 'Great Pumpkin Dash'
It's not too soon to put this on your calendar. It will be here before you know it. Kelli handed out Requests for getting sponsors for this race. It will be held the same place it was held last year, San Marcos Toyota. The date is October 29, 2016. It will be organized by our club. Meetings will begin right away. Be sure and get started on soliciting sponsors for this race. This is a major fundraisers that will help charitable endeavors in San Marcos and Hays County, also scholarships, San Marcos High School Key Club, Miller Junior High Builder's Club, De Zavala Elementary K-Kids & Terrific Kids, Hays County Youth Livestock Expo, Capital Area Council of Boy Scouts and the Hays County Food Bank. Kelli also handed out a list from last year on who sponsored the race, so.....Go Fer It! Every member of our club should be participating in this event. You all are needed!

The Statue of Liberty, built between 1875 and 1884 by sculptor Auguste Bartholdi, was a gift from the French people to celebrate the ideal of liberty in America. The task of raising funds and building the pedestal, however was left to the American people. A campaign "In Aid of the Bartholdi Pedestal Fund" was created to raise the necessary money. As part of these efforts, in 1883, a prominent Jewish author, Emma Lazarus, wrote a sonnet called The New Colossus in which she challenged America to Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.....Lady Liberty captured the imagination of the U.S. and today remains a proud symbol of freedom throughout the world.
