 On July 4, 1776, the signers of the Declaration of Independence boldly asserted that all are "are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among them are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." With these words, our forefathers formed a new nation and put forth a vision of liberty and democracy that would forever alter history. Every Fourth of July, Americans celebrate this pivotal moment in our history, which set into motion the development of a land of freedom and opportunity unequalled in the world. |

OUR U PCOMING PROGRAM, THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2015
Since we are so close to Independence Day, July 4th, our Program 'bringer', Randy Cook wanted to bring someone connected with the military and veterans. He has brought the brand new Commander our cities Maurice T. Suttles VFW Post 3413, Jim Stuart. He was just elected for the year 2015-1016. We welcome him here this coming Thursday, July 2, 2015.
The VFW knows how important communuity service is to America, with volunteerism benefitting education, the environment, health sciences and civic projects. That's why the VFW works closely with other national organizations, such as Boy Scouts of America, Citizen Corps, March of Dimes, and America's Promise-The Alliance for Youth, among others. USO provides VFW members with additional opportunities to volunteer in their communities and give back to our troops and their families.
Each year VFW and Ladies Auxilliary members donate more than 11 million volunteer hours and $50 million to community service projects.

 At last Thursday's meeting, we had two guests present. Tracy Herman brought a fellow co-worker, Kathy McMains, who works with Tracy at Horizon Bay.
Then John Polk brought Rev. Jarrell Sharp, the brand new pastor at the First United Methodist Church here in San Marcos. Rev. Sharp preached his first sermon in his new appointment this last Sunday. Welcome to both Kathy and Jarrell.

"The New Librarian"
The new libarian decided that instead of checking out children's lbooks by writing the names of borrowers on the book cards herself, she would have the youngsters sign their own names. She would then tell them they were signing a "Contract" for returni8ng the books on time.
Her first customer was a second grader, who looked surprised to see a new librarian. He brought four books to the desk and shoved them across to the librarian, giving her his name as he did so.
The librarian pushed the books back and told him to sign them out. The boy laboriously printed his name on each book card and then handed them to here with a look of utter disgust.
Before the librarian could even start her speech he said, scornfully, "That other librarian we had could write!

This coming Saturday morning is July 4th, and time to put out flags once again. "Long May They Wave" Be at Ted's place as usual at 7:00am. All of the flags should be in their proper order, please don't borrow from someone else. Thanks.

"AFTER THE DISASTEROUS ONSLAUGHT OF RAIN, OUR CAMP IS SLOWLY GETTING BACK TO NORMAL.
  We had a nice bunch that came out to our camp last Saturday. The weather was perfect, the equipment was there, and as you can see the lawnmower that was submerged by the flood is back to mowing as you can see Gary Nelson cutting the grass. Both he and Gary Balkman worked hard on getting the mower back into operation. It was a miracle that they were able to do it. We had about 9 out there helping out. There was Gary Strunk, Gary Nelson, McBride Wilson, Doug Balkman, John Polk, Del Brown and Ted Breihan. Ted surprised everyone by bringing some delicious breakfast tacos from Refugio's. They were well received. By the time we left, none of us had a dry stitch of clothing on. It was hot, and oh yes, we were able to burn some of the trash lying around, and Gary S, Ted & Doug replaced some new seats on three of the picnic tables. John, Del, and McBride used their weed wackers to good use. There is still lots of work yet to do, but progress is being made. We can use more helpers.

 HISTORICAL EVENTS THAT HAPPENING DURING THE WEEK OF JUNE 26th - JULY 2ND.
June 26, 1945.........The United Nations Charter was signed in San Francisco by 50 nations. The Charter was ratified on October 24, 1945.
June 27, 1859..........American musician Mildred J. Hill (1859-1916 was born in Louisville, Kentucky. she composed the melody for what is now the world's most sung song, Happy Birthday to You"
June 28, 1919...........The signing of the Treaty iof Versailes formally ended World War I. According to the terms, Germany was assessed sole blame for the war, forced to give up Alsace-Lorraine and overseas colonies, and pay reparations of $15,Billion dollars. The treatu also
prohibited German remarmament.
June 29, 1972........The U.S. Supreme Court ruled (5-4) that capital punishment was a violation of the Eighth Amendment prohibiting "cruel and unusual punishment. The decision spared the lives of 600 individuals then sitting on death row. Four years later, in another ruling, the Court reversed itself and determined the death penalty was not cruel and unusual punishment. On October 4, 1976, the ban was lifted on the death penalty in cases involving murder.
June 30, 1971.........The 26th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was enacted, granting the right to vote in all federal, state and local elections to all American citizens 18 years or older. The U.S. thus gained an additional 11 million voters. The minimum voting age in most states had been 21.
July 1, 1862.........President Abraham Lincoln signed the first income tax bill, levying a 3% income tax on annual incomes of $600 - $10,000 and a 5% tax on incomes over $10,000. Also lon this day, the Bureau of Internal Revenue was established by an Act of Congress.
July 2, 1776.........The Continental Congress in Philadelphia adopted the following resolution, originally introduced on June 7, by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia:"Resolved that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and indepedndent States, that they are absolved from all allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain is, and ought to be, totally dissolved. That it is expedient forthwith to take the most effectual measures for fornming foreign Alliances. That a plan of confederation be prepared and transmitted to the respective Colonies for their consideration and approbation."

 A RIPPLE EFFECT!
By definition, a ripple effect is when reipples expand across the water once an object is dropped into it. One seemingly small effort can have a far-reaching impact.

"Arriving in Namibia, I realized the ripple effect of The Eliminate Project. Namibia, located in Southwest Africa, eliminated maternal and neonatal tetanus in 2001. The country has been successful in its immuization efforts because government leaders, medical personnel and UNICEF have worked hand in hand to reach every woman of childbearing age. Once MNT elimination was achieved, their focus switched to providing similar vaccinations given in the United States. Just this year, the new measles-nubella vaccine will be added to the list of vaccinations, which includes polio, DPT, pertussis and tetanus.......
The Namibian people celebrate life in a way that I have yet to see before. Beautiful healthy babies with bright futures were everywhere. When health workers were asked if they cousld remember the last case of MNT, they replied: "I don't remember.".........
It is important that we continue our fundraisinbg efforts for The Eliminate Project. In this last leg of the race we have an opportunity to ensure that the 23 remaining couintries become like Namibia. The Elimkinate Project is working and leading to so much more in the realm of healthcare and education. I am grateful to be a part of it and will hold in my heart the people of Namibia. I look forward to the many ripples The Eliminate Project will certainly achieve."
