Our Program from Last Thursday...Kids, Kids, Kids!
What a wonderful program Pam Cook brought last Thursday. It's always a pleasure to have kids come to our club meeting along with their school sponsor. So we had the K-Kids school sponsor, Brittany Antonietti ( just newly married); Elena Villanueva, the principal at DeZavala Elementary School, and two of the K-Kids, Christian Campor and Evan Villanueva.
The kids as well as their sponsor told us in great detail just all that they have been doing this past year, as well as some proposed programs in the future. They are very active, and very enthusiastic about their club, and appreciate the support that they get from our club.
Wow! Three winners in a row for Big Bucks. Merwin Richards was our winner and he gave it back. Keep in mind, it grows each week!
Our Program for this coming Thursday.....Lon Shell!
Like Lon has done in several of his programs, he will be bringing a power point presentation this coming Thursday to show some of the tractors that he has restored over the years, as well as a history of farm tractors. He will be describing and telling stories about these tractors.
The tractor in this picture was Lon's first tractor to restore. It is a John Deere D - a 1929 model. He got it from Buddy Abel's metal scrap pile. Lon's restoration of this tractor started in 1978 and took 5 years to complete.
The first John Deere model D came out in 1923 - replaced the Waterloo Boy and was the first model to carry the John Deere name. The D's were made through 1953. These any many other stories about tractor restoration await us at our meeting on November 9th. don't miss it.

What a Fantastic and Successful 'Clean Up Camp & Club Picnic'
It couldn't have come off any better - the weather was super, the temperature was not too hot or not too cool - just right. All of the clean up that needed to be done was done - thanks to you who pitched in for this chore....and then there was 'food, glorious food!' and plenty of it. Thanks to Steve Whigham who seemed to be doing OK in cooking the hamburgers and hot dogs on the portable grill brought by Lon Shell. Nothing could have come off any better, but it took all of the club working together to pull it off. Thanks to all of you who brought, food, chips, soft drinks, water, and that marvelous, special cake that was given and eaten by all in honor of Ted Breihan's 91st birthday. I've never seen Ted without words. I know that he was deeply moved, and rightly so bdcause his brother had passed away just a couple days before this event.
There was a grand turnout for this event and here they are: Ted & Francis Breihan; Doug & Jeanne Balkman' Rob Martin & Linda; John & Mary Polk, Lon Shell, Del Brown, James Collier, David Chandler, Randy & Pam Cook;Cynthia Bentley; Courtney Taylor; Charles Walts; Frederick & Margo Case; Beverly Crumley; Gary & Nancy Strunk; Gary Nelson; Kelli & Steve Whigham; Rhonda White. I think that comes to 26. Great!!!! Everyone contributed to the action, and isn't that what clubs are all about?
Flags to be Displayed this coming Friday, November 10th
All those who normally put up flags on Veteran's Day which is November 11 are asked to come to Ted's place on FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10! Go ahead and put out your regular route, being at Ted's by 7am, and pick your flags back up between 4:30 - 5:00pm. Remember, Flags displayed on our regular route on Friday.
Then on SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 11, we need to put out flags JUST around the square, N, S, E, W. Now then, plans for the Veteran's Day Parade: Those who would like to help put the float together, be out at the Warehouse on Staples Rd by 8:30 or 9am.. We will then drive the float and Tractor up to Ted's and leave it there overnight.
Then on SATURDAY MORNING, we all need to be at Ted's by 8:00am to help decorate the float. The parade will probably start at 10:00am, so we should have plenty of time to decorate...after decorating, we will all get on the float and go to LBJ on the east side of the courthouse. There, breakfast is served, and kids with their bikes will be there, so we can help them decorate their bikes. This year, we would like to have as many kids riding our float as well as club members.
When it is our turn to feed into the parade, we will go out on Hopkins street by turning left off of LBJ, walk and/or ride the float to Guadalupe, turn left, to San Antonio St, turn left onto LBJ again until the parade is finished. OK?
For our new members, this parade is very moving and significant, especially if you are connected with veterans. It makes me proud! See you!
"Another Ramp Was Built!
Sorry about lack of pictures. They were sent along with this text, but somehow your editor failed to save them in the proper library, but here is the wonderful news about the latest ramp that was built on Saturday, October 28, 2017.
On that day, Texas State University Doctorate of Physical Therapy Students, San Marcos, TX Ramp Warehouse team, San Marcos High School Key Club member and San Marcos Kiwanis members constructed a ramp for Anselm Salazar. Mr Salazar was waiting in a Physical Therapy Rehab Center for this ramp to be built so he could get in and out of his home.
The ramp was 46 feet long and took only 3 hours to complete. The entire building group came to 17 members. Ten of the team was part of the TxSt PT program. This was their first ramp and all Gary Nelson , Hays County Texas Ramp Coordinator could say was "What an outstanding job they did." "I am ready to have them help with more ramps, very engaged students. Even though the weather was chilling, they worked without complaining at all.

November 3, 1534 - - King Henry VIII became Supreme Head of the Church of England following the passage of the Act of Supremacy by Parliament!
November 4, 1922 - - King Tut's tomb was discovered at Luxor, Egypt, by British archaeologist Howard Carter after several years of searching. The child-King Tutankhamen became pharaoh at age nine and died around 1332 at age 19. The tomb was found mostly intact, containing numerous priceless items now exhibited in Egypt's National Museum in Cairo.
November 5, 1911 - - Aviator C.P. Snow completed the first transcontinental flight across America, landing at Pasadena, California. He had taken off from Sheepshead Bay, New York, on September 17th and flew a distance of 3,417 miles!
November 6. 1860 - - Abraham Lincoln was elected as the 16th U.S. President and the first Republican. He received 180 of 303 possible electoral votes and 40 percent of the popular vote!
November 7, 1885 - - Canada's first transcontinental railway, the Canadian Pacific, was completed in British Columbia!
November 8, 1895 - - X-Rays were discovered by Wilhelm Roentgen at the University of Wuerzburg in Germany
November 9. 1872 - - The Great Boston Fire started in a dry goods warehouse then spread rapidly in windy weather, destroying nearly 800 buildings. Damage was estimated at more than $75 million. The fire's bright red glare could be seen in the sky for nearly 100 miles!

Henry Fried, one of the foremost horologists in the United States, gives a simple explanation for this Imponderable. Before the advent of clocks, we used sundials. In the northern hemisphere, the shadows rotated in the direction we now call "clockwise." The clock hands were built to mimic the natural movements of the sun. If clocks had been invented in the southern hemisphere, Fried speculates, "clockwise" would be the opposite direction."

"AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL....Chimney Rock State Park, NC"
Chimney Rock State Park, which is located approximately 25 miles from the town of Asheville, North Carolina, boast miles of hiking trails and the beautiful 400' Hickory Nut Falls. Of course, the most famous destination in this state park is the more than 300 foot monolith known as the Chimney Rock, which boasts amazing views of surroundings. Visitors can either take the 26 story elevator or climb 500 steps - - or the approximate equivalent of 31 flights of stairs - - to reach the top of the Chimney. This park is relatively new, having only been authorized by the North Carolina General Assembly in 2005
"To Set One's cap at (or for) a person"
To strive to gain the affection of a person: always said of a woman or maiden who, perhaps modestly or perhaps ostentatiously. puts her best foot forward in her efforts to gain the attention and win the admiration of the male she favors as a lifelong companion in matrimony. The expression was once more literal than figurative. Back in the days when women considered a light muslin cap a necessary part of ordinary indoor attire, it was but natural for a maiden, a spinster, or a widow to don her most becoming or fanciest cap when an eligible gentleman came to call. Of course young brother or nephew Diccon would spot the dress-up headgear, and the family would adopt his remark that Molly or Aunty Prue was 'setting her cap at' the young squire or even the parson. The common expression may go back to the seventeenth century, but was certainly known to Oliver Goldsmith in the eighteenth. The younger generation of today probably does not know it.
