PROGRAM FOR THIS COMING THURSDAY, MAY 17, 2018
Pam Cook will be bringing the program for this coming Thursday. Five scholarships were handed out to 5 seniors this year, and they will be coming to our program to explain what they plan to do after High School, Each will be given an opportunity to address our club. Congratulations to these five who were chosen from several other applicants.

New Opportunity for a Club Get Together.
This article comes from Moe Johnson, and he will probably discuss it at more length this coming Thursday. Moe & Diana went to a western swing dance in Creedmore last month and they had a great time. The dance meets the 3rd Sunday of the month (20th May) from 3:30-6:30 pm at the Community Center in Creedmore. Cost is $10 per person a $5 catfish plate if anyone is hungry. Music is western swing with two step and waltzes primarily with a polka thrown in on request. Small crowds mostly (30-40 couples). Creedmore community is just starting this up, maybe this is about the 5th event. Moe will have a sign up sheet available this Thursday for any who are interested.
Directions to the Community Center is (take I-35 to exit to toll road 45 but take road to th e left (?1625) and go until you hit the stop light and take a right. The Community Center is about 1/4 mile down on the left. Easy to find and about a 30 minute drive. See you Thursday!
Week of May 11th to May 17
May 11, 1862 - - To prevent its capture by Union forces advancing in Vi8rginia, the Confederate Ironclad Merrimac was destroyed by the Confederate Navy. In March, the Merrimac had fought the Union Ironclad Monitor to a draw. Naval warfare was thus changed forever, making wooden ships obsolete.
May 12, 1937 - - George VI was crowned at Westminster Abbey in London, following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII. King George reigned until his death in 1952. He was succeeded by his daughter Elizabeth, the current reigning monarch.
May 13, 1846 - - At the request of President James K. Polk, Congress declared war on Mexico. The controversial struggle eventually cost the lives of 11,300 U.S. soldiers and resulted in the annexation of lands that became parts of Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, California, Utah and Colorado. The war ended in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
May 14, 1607 - - The first permanent English settlement in America was established at Jamestown, Virginia, by a group of royally chartered Virginia Company settlers from Plymouth, England.
May 15, 1972 - - George Wallace was shot while campaigning for the presidency in Laurel, Maryland. As a result. Wallace was permanently paralyzed from the waist down.
May 16, 1862 - - During the American Civil War, Union General Benjamin Butler, military governor of New Orleans, issued his "Woman Order" declaring that any Southern woman showing disrespect for Union soldiers or the U.S. would be regarded as a woman of the town, or prostitute. This and other controversial acts by Butler set the stage for his dismissal as military governor in December 1862.
May 17, 1875 - - The first Kentucky Derby horse race took place at Churchill Downs in Louisville.

"The term Redneck originated in the coal mines of Kentucky and West Virginia at the Battle of Blair Mountain, which was the largest civil uprising in US History. In 1921, West Virginia miners clashed with lawmen and hired hands of the coal companies when they tried to stop the miners from forming a union. Approximately 13,000 miners with red bandanas tied around their necks (to identify them as a separate group from the others) marched on Logan county. This uprising helped showcase the conditions faced by the miners and helped shape the way unions operated. It also turned union tactics into political battles to get the law on the side of labor. All these miners with red bandanas on their necks is said to be the origin of "red necks"

Glacier National Park is a national park located in the United States, state of Montana, on the Canada-United States border with the Canadian provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. The park encompasses over 1 million acres and includes parts of two mountain ranges, over 130 named lakes, more than 1,000 different species of plants, and hundreds of species of animals. This pristine ecosystem is the centerpiece of what has been referred to as the "Crown of the Continent Ecosystem," a region of protected land encompassing 16,000 square miles. The region that became Glacier National Park was first inhabited by Native Americans. Upon the arrival of European explorers, it was dominated by the Blackfeet in the east and the Flathead in the western regions.
