  RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONY AT OUR KIWANIS CLUB MEETING.
We had a tremendous turnout at last Thursday at Grins Restaurant. Representative of the San Marcos Chamber of Commerce came out to officially cut our membership ribbon , declaring that we are now officially an active member of the Chamber. It was a very big step forward for our club, as it will grant us more visibility into the important work we do with the kids of our community. Margaret Lindsey, Eselda Rodriguez, and Haley Cleveland were from the chamber as well as a few others, but these three then stayed for our Kiwanis club meeting and lunch. Thanks to all our club members who came out to show our appreciation to the Chamber for including us more into the workings of our city.

 "A KIWANIS MEMBER'S DREAM REALIZED"
( I got this email from Dr. Garry White,a fellow Kiwanian. on Monday, the 25th and I asked him if I could put it in the bulletin, and he said "Yes!!!")
"After 6 months of parental idle time, I found something. This past week, I started as a math/science tutor for Boysville, a home for CPS foster kids, ages 6-17. Boysville admits only Basic level care kids. Those with violent or criminal history are not admitted. The foster kids signed an agreement stating that they want to be there be there and will cooperate. Boysville is on Hwy 1604, across from Randolph Air Force base., It began in the early 1940's when the police picked up boys sleeping in Travis Park in San Antonio and took them to a church rather than juvenile detention.
The advantage of being a tutor is having a very structured interaction with a purpose; good grades in school, good future. The cottage and gym volunteers are basically extra eyes for the staff. I will get to know the kids better and have a more meaningful interaction.
I was impressed with the good behavior in the Boysville library, where they do their homework. They were cooperative and quiet; no horse playing around. The elementary kids came in, sat on the floor and waited for instructions. A middle schooler, who works in the library after school, told me he is to get things for staff & volunteers. He is the staff "Gopher"
One high school teen blew me away. I was helping him read words. He is a poor reader. His reading level was similar to my reading level when I was in high school. You can imagine my internal reaction. He told me he likes to work with his hands and wants to be an auto mechanic. Another teen, I helped with Algebra II; imaginary numbers, "i", the square root of -1. In other words, the square of "i" or "i" times "i" is -1. This teen wants to be an orthopedic surgeon. Well, with the A's being made in High School physics, that is a possibility.
Where all of this will go in 6 months, I do not know. But I do know my parental time is no longer idle.

  OUR PROGRAM COMING UP ON JANUARY 28TH.
Our program this coming Thursday will be brought by Chester Banks. He will be bringing Laura Torres,, the Volunteer Coordinator for CASA. CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocates.
When a child enters the foster care system because his or her home is no longer safe, a judge may appoint a committed volunteer to help. That volunteer is cal;led a Court Appointed Special Advocate. CASA volunteers are screened, highly trained and then appointed by judges to represent and advocate for a child's best interests in the child protection system.
CASA volunteers are each assigned to help one child or set of siblings at a time, so they can focus on giving that child or sibling group the individualized advocacy and attention they need.
CASA of Central Texas, Inc. provides valuable volunteer advocacy for abused child from Caldwell, Comal, Guadeloupe and Hays Counties. CASA volunteers serve as the "eyes and ears" for the judges in child welfare cases. Let's have a great turnout to hear Laura talk about CASA.

The hospital's consulting dietician was giving a lecture to se veral community nurses from the Southhampton area of Hampshire.
'The rubbish we put into our stomachs and consume should have killed most of us sitting here, years ago. Red meat is terrible. Fizzy drinks attack your stomach lining. Chinese food is loaded with MSG/. Vegetables can be disastrous because of fertilizers and pesticides and none of us realise es the long term, damage being done by the rotten bacteria in our drinking water. However, there is one food that is incredibly dangerous and we all have, or will eat it at some time in our lives.
Now, is anyone here able to tell me what food it is that causes the most grief and suffering for years after eating it?"
A 65 year old nurse sitting in the front row, stood up and said, "Wedding Cake!"

We had a happy winner last Thursday. Chester Bank's name was drawn and he elected to put the $4.00 into the General Fund. Congratulations, Chester. See how easy it is? Maybe you will get it next week

  WHAT A WONDERFUL PROGRAM, GARY NELSON BROUGHT TO OUR CLUB LAST THURSDAY!''
Even though the subject of death is not necessarily our favorite subject, Amelia Aldape and Barrie Breed, both from CTMC Hospice Center gave a very thorough and encouraging program about the need for any loved one who is facing the end of his or her life be given every consideration and be allowed to die with as much dignity as possible.
Amelia has been a nurse most of her life, and just recently took over as interim director of the Hospice Services. Barrie had personally gone through the loss of her husband and her main concern was to have an in hospital wing at CTMC to allow family members to live with their loved ones, as they prepare for their departure from this life. The Fourth Floor of CTMC has been converted to such a facility. Thanks to both Amelia and Barrie for sharing their feelings about this subject with us. Thanks to you, Gary for providing this program.
