 On October 15, our Board of Directors voted to become part of San Marcos Chamber of Commerce. This is a very big step for our club to take, and a very important step. Once a year, our city has a Business Exposition. We will have a booth reserved for us, so that we can be more visible. You will also see that we have had two articles in our city's newspaper. I want to recognize Kelli Whigham, who has written the articles and in at least one case, Ted Breihan for taking the articles to the newspaper. There is going to be an organizational meeting of the Chamber on Tuesday, October 27, and we will have a representative or two present to see how we can help the Chamber and vice versus. Thank you Moe for setting this up for our club.

What a Saturday last Saturday was...Rain, rain, rain...Wind, wind,wind! Cold, cold, cold, and yet in spite of all of the hardships that October 24th threw at our club and 10 stalwart, runners, the
2015 October Dash 5K race came off with the finest bunch of club members working together, putting up about 8 canopies, fighting the wind, putting up about 12 tables more or less, with the rain beating down on everyone, drenching every inch of everyone. As the old saying goes, in spite of everything that could go wrong, nothing deterred all of the best Kiwanis club members never complained, but pitched in, knowing that after setting everything up bringing the runners packets, t-shirts, fruit, water, Gatorade, donuts, pumpkins, hay bales, and the greatest Kiwanis spirit that anyone could have asked for. Why didn't we cancel? Because there were 10 eager, cold, determined runners that had enough faith in our club to come out to run, and run they did. Kelli Whigham and her committee committed themselves that in spite of horrible conditions, they had a race to run, and even though we didn't have the runners we expected, the ones that did show up were absolutely wonderful in spirit and true grit. (that's a little phrase by John Wayne) Thanks to all who came out to help. You were wonderful. Having just moved into his new office in Whitehall, pompous, newly promoted Lieutenant Commander Rodney Grant (Royal Navy) was sitting at his desk when Leading Seaman Jones knocked on his door. Particularly aware of his new position, the commander quickly picked up the phone, told the seaman to enter, then said into the phone, "Yes Admiral, I'll be seeing him this afternoon and I'll pass along youyr message. In the meantime, thank you for your good wishes, sir".
Feeling as though he had sufficiently impressed young Jone, he asked, "What do you want?"
"Nothing important, sir" Jones replied without battering an eyelid, "I'm just here to connect up your new telephone."

WHAT A MAGNIFICENT AND AWE INSPIRING EXPERIENCE....TOURING THE H.E.B. DISTRIBUTION CENTER.
On October 20th, 9 members of our club toured the H.E.B. Distribution Center, located on Hunter Road in San Marcos. What a monumental experience that was. Just visiting our two HEB stores here in town, you cannot begin to imagine the immensity of where all the food, and other items that are in our stores, come from. The center has close to 1,000 employees, doing everything from constantly sweeping the floors, making sure everything is clean and tidy, to driving one of hundreds of motorized vehicles that goes constantly around the store, picking up what the stores have ordered, taking them to where they need to go, automatically wrapping the containers, and automatically sending them to what stores they need to go throughout Texas. Adam Olson, the Distribution Center gave those of us w
ho were on the tour, one of the most complete and understandable description of what goes on in this Center, 24-7. The members that were fortunate enough to attend this tour were: Randy & Pam Cook, Doug & Jean Balkman, Del & Marie Brown, Charles Johnson, Chester Banks and Ted Breihan. We all want to thank Doug Balkman for making this tour possible. It was G-R-E-A- T!!!!!

THANK YOU CORY CAROTHERS FOR BRINGING A VERY INFORMATIVE PROGRAM LAST THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22.
Whenever a speaker brings a program that might meet with some folks in a positive way, or whether it meets folks in a negative way we should give he or she our full, considerate and polite attention. Our club did just that last Thursday when Cory Carothers brought a program dealing with a two sided issue.....Is flouride in our drinking water harmful to our health, or are the risks of not having flouride in our water more harmful to people, especially with regards to their teeth. Cory had his facts and figures all laid out and even though this issue is an emotional issue and could go either way in the way we vote on this issue on Election Day, we will have gotten both sides explained to us. Sam Brannon holds the position that flouride is dangerous to your health, Cory presented the other side. I guess we can say without any reservation that too much of anything could be not healthy in some ways, but Cory is a dentist and he was approaching the issue of flouride from his professional expertise. Is there a right & wrong answer to this issue. It has been brought to our city by folks that have researched both sides, and now it is up to the voters to declare their feelings on Election Day, which is not very far off. We appreciate Cory very much for coming and presenting why flouride is not only safe, but essential in the treatment of tooth health.

>A group of Kiwanians will travel to Ghana in November to witness UNICEF-led activities and see how Ghana has sustained its earlier elimination of MNT. Keep an eye out for their stories and photos to share with your club. The faces in their photos represent the long-term impact of the Kiwanis family's contributions through The Eliminate Project.

HISTORICAL FACTS DURING THE WEEK OF OCTOBER 23 - 29TH
1. October 23, 1942........British General Bernard Montgomery launched a major offensive against German forces under Erwin Rommel at El Alamein, Egypt.
2. October 24, 1861......The first transcontinental telegram in America was sent from San Francisco to Washington, addressed to President Abraham Lincoln from the Chief Justice of California.
3. October 25, 1854.........During the Crimean War, the Charge of the Light Brigade occurred as Lord Cardigan led the British cavalry against the Russians at Balsaclava. Of 673 British cavalrymen taking part in the charge, 272 were killed. The Charge was later immortalized in the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson.
4. October 26, 1881 - The shoot-out at the O.K. Corral in Tombstone, Arizona, occurred between the feuding Clanton and Earp families. Wyatt Earp, two of his brothers and "Doc" Holliday gunned down two Clantons and two others.
