"Teams at the University of Florida in Gainesville were nicknamed the Gators by Philip Miller, a Gainesville merchant who owned and operated a drugstore specializing in student goods. While ordering some team pennants and banners, Miller realized the university had no mascot. He chose an alligator because no other university had adopted it and the alligator was a native to the state."
